Design your own sks

I'd like to have a heavy barrel version, increased length of pull. Keep it simple still for tool less take down. More refined irons. And a rock solid optic mount. ... pretty much stuff that can be done , but with some added cost. Something super Precision milled would be cool also.....For my own personal one I just have a non laminated stock version cleaned up with the magwedge replacement rear peep sight and a tapco front sight. And a butt pad for increased LOP. Got to keep it simple, and cheap.

Dad003 that's some impressive work there, definite nod to that. I'm new to the works including the sks but I went tapco for looks and increased length of pull, iron sights/aperture and stripper clip feedable, now soon to have a Magwedge G9 for the simple fact that the sks is cheap and fun and customizable and is a tinkerer's dream. I've dumped more money into building an RC rockcrawler than a lot of people would dare spend on any rifle.

I wouldnt feel too bad about the RC crawler man, the RC hobby is just as awesome as the firearms hobby!

I've got more 1k into a traxxas slash lol

i did a few both had thread here about it

that one still not done need to weld a few parts but dont have a welder at the moment to finish it

and the other one that i tried to 3dprint one time but didnt work well and i believe all the dealer stock that when up recently on the market are inspired by mine

What material were you using to 3D print? If you were using ABS, I imagine there would be problems. Have you tried ASA? PM me if you want

I wouldn't change anything...and it's a carbine so its supposed to be light and short. If I want to shoot a tree branch I'll pull out a 91/30.

I don't believe in making a gun/rifle into something it's not.

See, now that's what I'm talking about. Some nice mods there. Yes,.different from the original but that's what a mod thread is about folks. I respect the purists but I have a milling machine and a couple of sks' that need an image makeover. The ak looking guns are very well done.

The work done on this one is impressive....

I think that may be the first SKS "AK-style" conversion I've ever seen that doesn't look like utter crap! Actually not bad.

On a completely unrelated topic, if I were designing my own - Magwedge rail, mag adapter, and a Timbersmith stock like the one earlier in the thread. Ultimate SKS IMHO

I'd like the same contour as the traditional stock, but polymer. I'd like it to still have the compartment for the cleaning kit, but replaceable buttpads for LOP. Molot side rail and appropriate optic for the environment.

Some of the time and effort put into these conversions is really impressive, but personally I like the SKS for it's simple function and durability.

I want a folding stock that looks like it belongs on a combloc rifle, and not in a sci-fi movie. This is perfect:

Found this on another site. It's homemade using a folding stock from a cz858. I think the grip is from an 858 too. I might just have to make one as well.

I've long learned to shoot battle rifles the way they are made and can be reasonably efficient without modifications. I think it would suck to have to modify every single rifle to be good with it. I wonder if people have to modify computer keyboards, pianos, guitars, door knobs, hammers, shovels, coffee cups, and hockey sticks in order to use them efficiently?

I have yet to see one person out at the range that can shoot better with all these mods. Of course we are here on the internet where everyone is a combat vet with a metal of valor for their shooting skills... yet on the range, all them mods are a waste of money and people still can't shoot.

SKS's are somewhat fun to mess with (to a point) and it's usually interesting to read of others adventures .... but you're correct fiddler, none of the modded SKS's shoot any better nor do the shooters because of the mods.

Only "mod" I see do much on an SKS is addressing a specific problem like the action flopping all over the place in the stock. Guys have had good success fixing that problem sometimes dropping MOA in half back to the average SKS "accuracy".

I'm with you. Essentially leave it alone and work on how to properly run it.

Mine are modded but minimal.

- remove bayo
- remove bayo lug
- thin Tech-Sight target front post
- Tech-Sight rear sight
- trigger job
- changed position of rear sling attachment

I have found no real need to change the stock, not even LOP ... and I'm not short nor have short arms.

Zero at 19m first intersection, 170m second intersection.

Learn how to run it consistently.

Done.

Im going to initiate an SKS marksmanship challenge this summer..... similar to Rifle Chairs cabin fever challenge. Modded SKS's vs Stock SKS's ..... THEN we will see who is actually walking the talk here!

Is your challenge going to Exclude custom hand loads and Brand name factory ammo ?

I think in the true spirit of the Military nature of the SKS ,, Surplus ammo should be used as it puts re loaders and non re loaders on a level playing field , no matter the country of manufacture , just it's Mil surplus .

Thoughts

Hello Buddy

Hand loaders can uniformly and make consistent powder charges , testing different loads to produce the best possible groups for their rifle .

Many of us have pulled surplus ammo and checked the power charge weight and have found up to over 1.5 grains more that the round from the same box , I can only imagine the power charge differences over a whole case of ammo , this produces different velocity and resulting point of impact at any give distance .

Even two identical centre fire rifles will prefer different power , different load , different bullet weight , different bullet type that result in the best groupings , even primer types/ brands can make a difference ,

The limit would be surplus ammo with all it's inherent problems , like that experienced by solders in the field ,

Also not every one has the equipment or the money to set up to start reloading 7.62 X 39 .

But it is YOUR idea to have this Challenge and you can set the rules as you wish .

I was adding my 2 cents to your idea.

Do not wish to offend or intrude .
