Design your own sks

I've long learned to shoot battle rifles the way they are made and can be reasonably efficient without modifications. I think it would suck to have to modify every single rifle to be good with it. I wonder if people have to modify computer keyboards, pianos, guitars, door knobs, hammers, shovels, coffee cups, and hockey sticks in order to use them efficiently?

I have yet to see one person out at the range that can shoot better with all these mods. Of course we are here on the internet where everyone is a combat vet with a metal of valor for their shooting skills... yet on the range, all them mods are a waste of money and people still can't shoot.

I am just enjoying the irony that fiddler is anti-fiddling. :)

Hello Buddy

Hand loaders can uniformly and make consistent powder charges , testing different loads to produce the best possible groups for their rifle .

Many of us have pulled surplus ammo and checked the power charge weight and have found up to over 1.5 grains more that the round from the same box , I can only imagine the power charge differences over a whole case of ammo , this produces different velocity and resulting point of impact at any give distance .

Even two identical centre fire rifles will prefer different power , different load , different bullet weight , different bullet type that result in the best groupings , even primer types/ brands can make a difference ,

The limit would be surplus ammo with all it's inherent problems , like that experienced by solders in the field ,

Also not every one has the equipment or the money to set up to start reloading 7.62 X 39 .

But it is YOUR idea to have this Challenge and you can set the rules as you wish .

I was adding my 2 cents to your idea.

Do not wish to offend or intrude .

ok I thought you were going to mention something like loaders would load weak loads in order to reduce the recoil of the SKS to allow for quicker follow up shots.... Believe me, when performing a timed challenge like rifle chairs cabin fever; hits inside an 8" circle at 100yrds.... the accuracy of your SKS whether it is 2"-4" wont really influence your score... But maybe because youv pointed accuracy out. It would be cool to incorporate a initial cold bore 5 round group un timed fully supported if needed at the beginning of the challenge. The allowance for hand-loads at this stage would be a touchy subject... but this would allow the participants to verify the zeroing of their rifle before carrying out the challenge. And of course demonstrating a random sample of how accurate their SKS can be.

I must say that I was Unaware of the meaning of " performing a timed challenge like rifle chairs cabin fever " so some of my comments were misplaced due to my lack of knowledge about "A rifle chairs cabin fever challenge ".

Sorry about that .

So hand loads vs Mil surplus ammo in this type of shoot does not really affect the possible score ?

So stock Russian and Chinese SKS and moded ones would all be included ?

I was just thinking about including as many of our CGN's members to try and not be limited by lack of equipment ie , hand loading , Tapco type stocks ect .

As you see a couple of posts up I show my moded 54r .

Keep us posted !!!!!

You are correct that most people have not earned their cross revolvers or crossed rifles , or won gold in Provincial Combat shooting comps . How ever they are many great shooters out there and would earn their cross revolvers or crossed rifles easily . Using a wide brush is not always the best way to cover a subject .

yet on the range, all them mods are a waste of money and people still can't shoot.

Here SIR we disagree , proper mods can improve accuracy and shoot ability .

Example standard SKS 54r Laminated wood stock , all matching , all blue steel .

50 Yards , Romaine Mil surplus , bench rest used , ( Note was a re used target left at the range and patched before test shoot )

same SKS 54r moded , 50 Yards , Romaine Mil surplus , bench rest used sight in target .. a pic of my SKS 54r is on the previous page ) all Mods done by me at home .

april%20shoot%20009_zpsftokontr.jpg

same day , 100 yard test same SKS 54r moded

100 Yards 7 shot group , point of aim was the yellow rectangle , did not adjust sight , shot for group .

Max spread centre to centre 2 inches , 7 shots

Note : first 2 shots ( lower left ) adjustment " Up and Right " . next 8 shots fired and impacted at point of aim , the sighting correction brought the shots to point of aim .

Sir perhaps you can shot any military rifle or non military rifle at any distance with you training , knowledge and experience and with no attempts to improve the fit and function of a rifle , you can shoot one hole groups all day , I think that is great !! , you are a far far better shot than I will ever be !!

Some of us do enjoy at improving our rifles to enable us to attempt to shoot better .

No offence intended ,,, All the Very Best Sir , Keep enjoying the sport !

Your Right burns but that member was very disrespectful to other members and their shooting ability and stated that mods are ineffective and a waist of money , both not true .

Sorry ...........

I just thought this thread was to be a think-tank of sks stock possibilities. Maybe day dreams is more accurate.. Ha!

Who says that a modification has to make a measurable improvement in accuracy? Rubbish. Changing the stock is about as much modifying as painting the gun. Just going for a different look. People custom paint their precision rifles desert camo all the time. They would only do it because it makes the rifle shoot better, right..? Why else would they "waste" the money?

I've met my rant quota for the day and I'm not even sure who it was directed at...

I still want a proper "paratrooper" stock for my sks. Reason: looks cool.

Totally. I modded mine because I don't need a bayonet lug, it rattled a lot from a sloppy gas tube cover, and i find the original stocks make the receiver stick out too much, which makes it seem bulbous and just, well... ugly. cou:

Now it fits me better, points better, looks better (to me). The fact that it also shoots better is an unintended bonus of a side effect.

Now it fits me better said:
Yep I did the same....

Barrel is 18.6" and the stock is homemade, with the right LOP and pistol grip...fits me prefect. Is it bubba...yes...does it work better,great..yes. I don't have the scope ,or rail on it anymore, just open sight, and with the recrown I did myself, It shoots...way better, then when I got it, in stock form.
So is there room for improvement on a 1952 SKS...HELL YES!!! And don't let anyone tell ya any different!! If it was so, than you wouldn't buy a Remington 700 and do ,or need any mods...it would be the best it could be ...right out of the box....so go ask a guy or gal who is shooting out to the 500 yard mark. And tell them they were stupid to do all the mod on there rifle...and they should have left it stock, because, it didn't really do anything ,to make it more accuracy ....and sit down and wait for there response....it should be fun!!

Well at least there are a few of us that tried recrowning and see better accuracy , good job on that SKS , thats some wood work you have done there , congrats !!
