I am trying to help out a friend with his .22. He wants to give it to his young son in a few weeks for his birthday. It is a Squires Bingham model 16. It is a clip fed semi auto scaled to look like an M16. It has a regular .22 clip with a larger bottom section to simulate the look of a M16 magazine as it exits the gun. Since he got it second-hand, it has never worked properly. Occassionally, if you're lucky, it will fire a few shells in a row, but more often than not, it will only fire the first round before it jams.
I have watched the chamber area carefully as I slowly #### the bolt to pick up the first shell and slowly push it forward into the chamber. The bolt picks up the shell and puts it in dead center of the chamber. There is no deflection at this point. Pull the trigger and it fires, but as the bolt goes forward again, the next shell jams before the bolt closes. The jammed shell is deformed beyond use.
I have noticed that as the bolt pushes the first shell forward, it seems like the bolt tries to drag the second shell, by friction, I assume, forward slightly as it sits atop the magazine. I cannot see what happens beyond this point because the bolt is closed and I have vapour locked trying to analyse the problem
Would it be possible that the shell that is dragged forward from underneath the bolt, is pushed forward to the position in the middle of the magazine that has no tabs holding it in the mag and is released from the mag as the first shell is being ejected and jamming the works. If so, could it be that the magazine spring is too weak to keep the shell in place as the bolt goes forward?
I would greatly appreciate any help with this. If I can take it apart, perhaps I could stretch the spring or even make a new one. I could use your help with this as well, as I don't know whats inside and wonder if anyone has seen or taken one apart.
I have attached a few links to pics of the mag. Thanks kindly!
