Detachable Mag or Floor Plate?

Hi everyone,

I am curious as to what everyone preference is. Any good/bad experiences that would make you choose one over the other? I am in the market for another rifle and scince Tikka isn't making any lefty stuff finding a detachable mag rifle seems impossible.

Myself, I like the detachable mag because I find loading/unloading easier and safer, I mean open the Floor Plate and you have ammo all over the place.

Oh yeah and Browning makes several wrong-handed models as well.:p
The Mag system on the Brownings is also unique in that you cna load it like a hinged floor plate or as a detachable mag!
 
I like the non-hinged removable floor-plate found on some military bolt rifles. With a after-market adapter they are easy to remove and never come loose under recoil. And, for unloading, if the operator has the least amount of manual dexterity, the ammo is easy to catch before it hits the ground.
 
Both systems have their place. For hunting only I like a hinged floorplate because it' s one less thing to get lost or forgotten.

But my rifles do dual duty as farm guns and detachable magazines mean I can leave the rifle accessible but separate from the ammunition while able to load quickly should the need arise.

I like the Sako 75/85 magazine system. It locks solidly, can be top loaded unlike the Tikka system and spare magazines although not cheap are easy enough to find.
 
I have ADLs, BDLs, and detaching mags. I like them all in their place.

One comment that is common about detachable mags is that they get lost, which is the fault of the operator, not the rifle. I've never lost one yet, and I have four rifle with them. Now that I've said that, I'll prolly lose a couple. :)

I prefer either a top loader, or a singleshot. That way you never have to ever worry about losing the mag.What could be worse than getting to your hunt camp and dicovering that your mag is sitting on the kitchen table 3 hrs away.

Detachable magazines are the way to go really. The only drawback is if you forget to bring the magazine or misplace it, which if you always keep it in the gun except to load it up when hunting shouldn't be a problem. I find when I'm hunting, I often am unloading and reloading several times in a day, and the couple time Ive seen deer from the truck and had a blind magazine, it really slowed me down ;) Detachable all the way
 
I know a guy who had a remington semi auto and lost his mag out in the bush. He turned it into remington stickomatic.:p LOL

by keeping a stick in the action, he could pull it out and have at least one shot.

I think blind mag or hinged floorplate would be the best if you are a walker. If you ride the quad around a lot, a mag should do the trick, if you can get off your bike and put the mag into your rifle without having supper run away.:p

A blind Mag would be the best in an emergency situation, you wouldnt have to worry about the mag falling out or worry about the hinge relaese being bumped when the it counted the most. - possible life or death situations-

To each their own.

P.S. If you have more than one person using the rifle, theres a higher chance of losing the mag. (your kids losing it for you)

Hinge plate for me.........the last time I had a detachable mag was in a Remington pump gun back in '83 or so. It would not feed properly and fell out from time to time..............never again.:mad:

Actually, in this situation- A hinged floorplate makes the most sense of them all. Why? You can clear a jam the quickest ina hinged floorplate.

I know, I know...Your guns never jam. Neither do mine.;) But situations have been known to get out of hand, and sometimes the operator makes an error when loading his magazine or stroking his bolt, and that leads to a jam or othe rmalfunction.

SO much easier to pop the hinged floorplate, dump the cartridges out in your hand (or on the forest floor) and relaod than it is to mess around with a detachable mag or blind magazine.:)
 
Hinged floorplate is my first choice as well. I have two rifle with detachable magazines, and if they were even a bit less accurate, they would be long gone. EE
