Did I waste my money getting an RPAL in 2025?

Just wondering if I wasted my money getting my RPAL in 2025? It doesn’t seem like there was a point other than getting a discount on the course and the license by applying at the same time as the PAL.

You should expect many NR to become R overnight after Apr 28.

My wife did her pal and rpal last month, adding the restricted was only a few bucks and what 40 minutes extra time, way easier to do it right away.
I did my pal, and rpal separate and that's what's stupid. IMO if your getting one, get both out of the way in one shot.

You can still buy body armor with you Rpal. And keep your fingers crossed that the political spectrum levels out to the conservative side. Never bad to have an Rpal
thats a provincial law, doesnt necessarily apply

Why? They wouldnt do that, it'd be Prohib or nothing

its an entire extra day of class

Way I see it, overqualifications can easily become the bare mininum in an environment where the feds are so hum drum about inflation of all kinds ;)

Welcome new guy.

Depends on how you define wasting your money. At the moment your options are very limited, but things change over time and you may find that an RPAL turns out to be very handy. You also pumped up the licensing numbers and that helps with lobbying efforts in politics.

In a land of increasing restrictions it is always best to get all the licenses that you can, because they may not be available in the future.

There is not much selection any more when it comes to restricted firearms but it’s still worth it I think to have the rpal
I'd be more concerned with NR becoming R in the future. At the moment the Libs are just banning everything, but they may run into a wall in those efforts and find that it is easier/more politically palatable/expedient to just reclassify a bunch of guns to keep them registered and easier to steal in the future. They have promised a revamp of the classification rules, so who knows what they do there and how it affects things?

the course I took was great but…misrepresented what could be done with the RPAL
What did the course/instructor say an RPAL lets you do?

This is more my concern after the classification system gets a working over.

Thanks for your well thought out response. I like the perspective. Off the top, the course side-stepped any direct questions related to the previous handgun ban and the bans imposed in December. In hindsight, the instructor likely didn’t want to get into the politics of it. However, I think we need to. The previous and new restrictions are neutering the law abiding citizens who are interested in firearms. I’ve read enough threads now of people being considered paper criminals simply for possessing restricted/banned firearms with no buy back program in sight.
The most recent bizarre reclassification of certain firearms is the most confusing. I think you’re right that having more licenses is better, but it is disheartening to see all of the “restricted” items being unavailable on all of the sites…something which I had hoped to obtain with my RPAL.
Thanks again for your thoughts- much appreciated.

I obtained my PAL back in 2004 over the years the thought has come to me to upgrade it to the RPAL (15 years before the OIC) but honestly there wasn't anything "R" that I was interested in tried a few handguns and AR's it just didn't do anything for me and that is why I only have my PAL. If my buddy gets divorced he will have to find someone else to store his "R"'s becasuse I already warned him that she is one crazy btch and just to tap her and GTFO.
