Didn't get a deer with my handgun.

What page does it say compressed gas rifles are not allowed?
Its been few weeks but i'll get the synosis to let you know. it was on first few pages of regulations i believe..
just gotta drive to walmart quick to see if they have more synopsis available.

Well, that was interesting,on page 3 of the bc hunting synopsis

Handgun – is a firearm that is designed,
altered or intended to be aimed and fired by
the action of one hand or that has a barrel less
than 305 mm (12 in.) in length.

The rossi has a 12 inch barrel so that's just long enough for hunting, shorter would make it a handgun in bc and i would say it's made to be fired with 2 hands as it has a forearm stock.
From page 9
Handguns
4It is illegal to hunt with a handgun in BC.
See page 3 for definition.
As for the co2,compressed gas just makes it classed as a firearm for hunting purposes.Yes you can hunt with a firearm in bc.

Firearm - includes a device that propels a
projectile by means of an explosion, compressed
gas or spring and includes a rifle,
shotgun, handgun, pellet gun, "BB" gun or spring
gun but does not include a bow.
NOTE
All this is BC provincial law and does not apply elsewhere.

That's all I've seen. Nothing about compressed air not being allowed for hunting in BC.

Actually, I agree with you. It is a handgun. And if I'd been in the office when the thing was submitted for classification, I would have labelled it a handgun. Restricted.

Does this rifle really looks like a handgun to some? Well, I've had quite a few handguns over the years and none looked like that. To me, it looks very similar to a Winchester/Marlin lever with the bbl. chopped and stock cut to a very short LOP.

But that's just me, and AFAIK I don't need glasses yet. I'm guessing the OP is new to handguns and what they look like. ;)

For those who are confused, here's a pic of a nice 44 magnum HANDGUN:

I can see why the CFC is not really concerned about it. I mean this Ranch Hand. Yeah sure the barrel is short(er), but look at the butt-stock? Too short to properly shoulder naturally and not designed for one handed firing. The rearsight looks way too big to be of any use at medium or longer ranges. This firearm is niether here nor there in it's present configuration.

This unusual one leaves me cold......

Now saying that, how about a Pre-64 Model 1894 with a 15" barrel instead? ;)
Pre-WWII these were a merely a custom order barrel length with Winchester.
About 1999 I called a Winchester sales rep' about getting a factory sub-16" barrel made for myself.
And they said this could only be manufactured for USA-LE organizations as it would fall under Class 3 designation!

Take one of these and install a standard carbine buttstock on it, and you have a dandy brush gun.

In the States, these style firearms are considered pistols.
So to call them a handgun is not much of a stretch, especially if you have seen them on utube reviews.
And another good reason to get one.
I want one in .44, but not sure which brand to go with.

I shot a few rounds out of a friend's RRH, and the wrist of the stock is all wrong for single hand shooting. You really do need to use both hands.

Understood but I think the OP was very effective at getting everyone riled up at calling it a handgun knowing the history and issues of Canadian gun control policy and laws.

For those who are confused the classic revolver is not the only format for a handgun.

What would you call this:

And anyone new to handguns may be puzzled by this

XP10022.jpg

and they don't chamber it in a handgun cartridge like .44 rem. mag. But where does this creature fit in?

^That is the only way I'd personally ever own one, along with a different rearsight too.

Rear sights are personal preference the stock one's not too bad if you like semi buckhorns. The stock front sight is way to low and more of an issue if you want to hit point of aim.

That's why I was curious if Duffy had regulated his sights.....

The above guns can be fired with the use of one hand but just like the ranchhand they are better suited to being held and shot with two hands and do better with a rest.

None of them can be really shot from the shoulder like a rifle. None of them are normally seen with sling swivels and a sling to carry them over your shoulder like a rifle. You usually would put any or all of them in a holster and wear them on your hip or across your chest, like a handgun and not like a rifle.

What do they say...if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck it is probably a duck.

I reckon a ranchhand looks like a handgun and shoots and caries like a handgun. So why do so many people want to call it a "short, long gun"

Sorry I didn't reply to your first post. I ordered 2 new rear sights (one is a sort of peep sight that I didn't care for) and a front sight from (www.stevesgunz.com) Then I tried three brands of .44 rem. mag. ammo and chose the best grouping brand.

I can shoot better groups at somewhat farther range than I do with my compound bow. So I hunt with it like I would with a bow with something of an advantage.

Right on, sounds like you know your gun and abilities with it.

Why not just call it a Mare's leg?

Is it legal to holster these puppies and go gallavanting around the countryside with them?
If so, I'm a gettin' one. I wanna play cowboy, too!:)

Call them whatever the heck you want, it's how the RCMP has it classified that counts. A Mare's Leg is non restricted so yes you can go gallavanting around the countryside with it. Just have an appropriate breakfast beforehand.

As for the Tompson Center pistol and Remington XP-100s, the RCMP classified them as restricted, so we are SOL on gallavanting with them.

Anyone interested in the Mare's Leg with or without the full size stock should probably make a coffee and enjoy thess posts.
