hi guys was looking at buying one of these 2 guns.. was originally going to get an SKS + tapco it but... meh

what is the difference between the cz858 made by cz and the CSA vz58?

which one do you guys recommend,,,

I understand the CSA vz58 has chrome barrel - is this it? is it worth it?

I can get a CSA vz58, telescopic stock for 829$+tax at my local gun dealer but is it worth it?

a EE dealer has the vz858 for 629$ if I am not mistaken..

I ALMOST GOT SCAMMED BUYING a vz858 on firearmscanada.com ... RCMP ARE ''INVESTIGATING'' aka doing nothing

That was easy..

The cz858 is old school, with wood stock. CSA is brand new stuff.

almost the same. csa is mostly restricted and also available in .223

If you want to shoot non restricted, get a 858.

Errrr what? The vz comes in many configurations both restricted and non restricted. Both 7.62x39 and .223/5.56, both wood stocks and black synthetic, both folding and both fixed. The cz858 is mostly refurb I believe

I bought a cz858 from frontier firearms (great service) and I love it! Keep it clean and oiled and you'll be happy! Great bang for you buck! Factory bipod and 5 round mag is all I needed.

Yeah, don't buy anything from firearmscanada, you might as well be buying through newspaper classifieds. Send money first, cross your fingers. No feedback mechanism/accountability. Bad news all around.
There are also non-CSA VZ-58's (aka original VZ's). Chrome-lined, x39, 14.5" barrel, res. Pretty damn good and they're a little cheaper than the CSA's. I have one of each. They're both solid.

The csa has thicker side walls to, for if you ever put the ak style scope mount on it. I think the 858 has new action too, to make it harder to make fully auto, but I am not sure on that. Was just something I heard a while back. Both great guns, I personally am getting the cz858 soon, put the money saved into ammo.

KK so cz858 is refurbished and CSA is newly made? anyways I see the cz858 for 630$ on EE apparently 'unfired'....

CSA vz 58 model with telescopic stock and 7.62 I am looking at is 829$... is that a good price or no? he wanted 850$ originally, is a reputable SW ontario seller, and I see the gun going for 899$ elsewhere....

200$ difference --- is it worth the extra price??

personally, i want the wooden stock for classic ak-47 look... which I will upgrade with telescopic stock and change the wood that's it.. I am a simple guy... should I just buy the telescopic stock model and then look for a csa wooden stock?

thanks guys!

so which 2 do you have? sorry... i think you mean the CZ858 ... but chrome lined?? lucky... how much did you pay?

yes firearmscanada.com is some BS.. watch your back on that site guys!

just make them send PAL and drivers license then call RCMP to verify that info..

I own a VZ58 and love it! I've never fired or held an CZ 858, but all of my research led me to believe that spending the extra cash for a CSA VZ58 was worth it.

Either you want a non restricted CZ or CSA, neither have a chrome lined bore but it really doesnt matter to much so long as you cleaned it after shooting.

Or a restricted CZ, FSN, CSA etc...

You want 7.62x39 or .223??

Almost all the same except for some minor differences.

CUrtton has a stickey explaing all of the different models.

I suggest you take a look at the top of the red rifles thread or do a search.

The CZ858 is an old military issue gun with little attention paid to how it "looks" on the outside. Its got a not so pretty painted finish and, from what I understand, is the most likely version to suffer from "the gremlin". This gun will likely come with 4 5/30 round magazines, a mag pouch and some other little items.

The VZ 58 is a newly built version of the 858 but made from brand new parts. Not old military stuff. The finish is nearly perfect, the bolt carrier is tabbed so there are no "gremlin" issues and its availiable with a folding stock and wood furniture, a fixed stock and wood furniture or an adjustable M4 style stock and decent looking plastic front handguard and pistol grip. This gun will come with only 2 5/30 round mags, a sling, cleaning kit and a few other minor items.

When I was deciding to buy an 858/58 I looked at which one looked and felt to be higher quality. The VZ58 was the clear winner. Costs more, comes with only 2 mags but is a really high quality gun in both build and appearance. I got the M4 version as I planned to upgrade to those parts anyway so it actually saved me a few $$'s. I dont regret spending the extra $$ at all.

Both are available in shorter restricted versions AND longer non restricted versions (which is what I bought). The 858 is only available in 7.62X39 where the VZ58 comes in 7.62 and .223.

I know there have been other variations of this gun available over the years. What I described above are the 2 you are most likely to find at retailers today.

I've been reading this sub-forum a lot and I see a LOT of posts about problems with CSA rifles - broken firing pins, FTE, FTF, etc. Not so much with the CZ858s unless it's the "gremlin" problem which is pretty easily remedied.

Also I don't know what everyone else is smoking, but CZ858 15.5" (restricted) barrels are ALL chrome lined. They are old ex-military barrels so it's a toss up what you get unfortunately; mine was brand new so I lucked out.

Unless I REALLY needed to shoot 5.56mm out of a CZ platform or I wanted a compact barrel style, I would venture away from the CSA guns. Search the forum here and you'll see why.

I have/had 3 different CSA platform rifles and NONE of them ever gave me any problems. Its like all guns tho, some may come out with a defective part

A couple of people mentioned that the 858 has wood furniture .
It's actually not wood but some kind of wood chip composite that looks like beaver puke , which is why it is frequently referred to as " beaver barf " .

Ugliest stuff I've ever seen , but quite strong .
A full set of either wood or plastic replacement furniture will run anywhere from $200-$400 , so add that to the cost if you hate the composite as much as I do .

Great gun though !
Simple and reliable so far at 700 rounds

I have a long winded post in a thread similar to this that you will find a little further down in red rifles. Basically by an 858, chances are you will never have a negative issue with it and you will have lots of fun shooting it. Not that you would not have fun with a CSA but the 858 is the closest thing to the military rifle which continues to be in service after 50+ years. I suppose the final choice is up to you but I would suggest handling and if possible shooting both rifles before you buy.

CZ 858 = the real deal/ battle tested Mil spec

CSA VZ 58 = new repro never battle tested/ small start up company, not CZ who makes the real VZ/CZ.

Both have there pro's and cons.

Beyond all th BS between the two that is the most basic rundown

wow now i am leaning back towards the cz858...

so it doesnt look good - but it works good.

and the vz58 looks good - but some people complain about it?

does anybody own both? if they could only choose one which one would it be?

and definitely the 7.62 not the 5.56 right?
