A debate on hunter ethics is a touchy subject, and not one that I often care to delve into. What one may find perfectly ethical, another may not Be it hunting over bait, pushing bush, using trail cams, laser range finders, scoped rifles, crossbows, or taking long shot....we all have our own ideas of what is right and wrong.

HOWEVER, this weekend I was talking to my buddy on the phone and he puts his buddy on the line so he can brag up his latest acheivement:

He shot at a nice 6pt bull elk 8 times at over 400 yards (hit it 4 times) in a hay field, finally knocking it down with a broken shoulder. He then proceeds to tell me that he and his buddy watched it flop around for OVER 25 minutes before it died without walking up to put a finishing shot into it

I couldn't believe my ears, and asked him if he really meant "25 Minutes", and he said "Yup"..."What's the big deal!"!

I won't repeat what I said after that... Tell me I'm not the only one that finds this utterly repulsive?

The guy is an absolute SLOB in my books, and has no business hunting (if that is what he calls what he does)!

That elk deserved better....

Why not? ;)

Ethics are certainly questionable.

So was a basic respect for the poor beast.

ETA:
For some reason, I get the sense that these guys would, at some point in the process, probably let the meat spoil as well. I hope that was not the case.

X2.

That's the difference between harvesting and killing. I think harvesting embraces the proper respect for the animal.

Probably to scared to walk up and cut it's throat or put a finishing round in it's head like a man.

I don't associate with that type of hunter or person for that matter. It leads to assult charges.

I am usually the last person to preach ethics to anyone as I believe they are generally a personal issue. BUT!! leaving an animal to suffer in the manner described above is beyond ethics... it is plain and simple cruelty and in my estimation it is criminal. The idiots who did that are not hunters they are ust fools with guns.
You have every right to be disturbed and disgusted with that behaviour Rob... give em hell!

i would have to agree with you
personaly i would gladly give him a couple of strokes with the butt of his own rifle if he was hunting with me.
firstly shooting it 8 times shows he hasnt been practing or the shots where out of the effective range of his skills.
secondly you DO NOT allow any game animal to suffer flopping around for 25 minutes. doing so shows a complete disrespect to the animal, the sport/heritage and the public image of all hunters.
thirdly i beleive that by allowing it to suffer for 25 minutes he has violate a fish and game law

That is disgusting and extremely disrespectful towards the animals that we harvest. People like that should loose all their hunting privilages. It must be illegal in some interpretation of the law, can anyone vouch for that?

My buddy shot a buck on Saturday, hit him high and severed his spine. I walked up to it and it was flopping around.

I felt bad that I had to wait about 30 seconds before I put the finisher in him.

25 min = a$$hole. Dude has no respect for the animal.

It's unfortunate....but there are people like that we have to live with. Ignorant people, stupid people and bunny huggers.

I think there should be a season on all three.....with no bag limit.

Sickening behavior. I agree with BR it's criminal and I'd tell the guy that too.

Not only did the elk deserve better our sport deserves better than guys like him.

Thats just bad and nobody should go that long. Whats so hard with shooting it one more time to finish it? Well hopefully that guy never hunts again

Idiots.

Even if the guy didn't care about the suffering, a 25 min death buggers up the meat with all that adrenaline being pumped into it.

Thats pretty sickening! People that dont respect the animals properly are hunting for the wrong reason.

I shot a doe this year, broke its back. I never heard a deer let out a yell like that before, then it was trying to crawl on its front legs away from me. That was enough for me and even though it would have died eventually I shot it in the head. Anyone that enjoys watching an animal suffer is a f'in idiot.

It's our responsibility to ensure that any animal we harvest is dispatched as quickly and humainly as possible. He took eight shots, what's on emore bullet to put the animal out of its suffering.

People like this usually encounter "what comes around goes around" in some capacity. Dont let this eat away at you too much as this guy is in the minority, most of the hunters I've met are pretty responsible and do their best to ensure shot placement. This guys idiocy will eventually come full circle and bite him in the ass some way or another, maybe he'll return from his next hunt to catch his wife/girlfriend humpin his best bud, who knows but I'm sure his turn will come. Or perhaps your words will get through to him and he wont ever let an animal suffer again the way he did with his elk.

Agreed 110% Morons with guns,

Don't worry folks, if karma has anything to do with it at all, the creep will come back in his next life as an elk and some slob hunter will shoot him and watch him flop, wheeze, & choke for an hour - or in plain old Canadian terms - what goes around comes around!
