Dispatching a Groundhog - What would you use?

.22 will work great, shot many a groundhog as a kid on a friend of my dads place. The neighbouring farmers were pleased to be rid of them.

My personal preference would be a Barrett M99 .50 BMG. Way more fun and you will have very little to clean up. Keep some of those fireworks around that make a big bang and set them off after you do the deed to confuse the neighbors. Or.....a boring little .22 will do the job.

Some of these posts are funny.
A .22 is more then adequate. A CCI quiet is actually pretty quiet, if you're worried about noise, but in my experience the first shot is never really questioned, while subsequent ones may be.

To properly dispatch a Ground Hog I would use a BFH and if that didnt work I would go and re-ReadTFM once more for good measure.
Then I would go back inside and get my CZ and load her up with boolitz and shoot it right behind the ear.

I shot one once, 220 swift 40 grain moly coated V max 4200 fps range was about 40 yards, it died on the spot.

Attach a hose to your exhaust pipe, run the hose into the groundhog hole, leave the car running.

you would think this would work but with all the anti-pollution crap on cars these days it doesn't. my grandfather used to kill them back in the late 80's this way. he would catch them in a live trap (mostly skunks) and dispatch them by putting a hose on the truck exhaust. he told me one day that this was no longer working, so I advised him to use the lawn mower. back in business.

well I have used a 22 rim fire to put down hundreds of beef well over 1ooolbs with a shot behind the ear or between the eyes so I am sure it would work very well on this critter .Can you get close to it ,,Dutch
