I've got my living room decorated in a "Canadiana" theme....canoe display shelf, snowshoes, spinning wheel, etc..., and was really wanting to add a rifle to the decor. Wall hanger cap and balls and flintlocks have been done to death, so I was wondering about one of my old Winchester leverguns which were originally designed for black powder cartridges. All of these rifles and carbines can shoot current ammo, so they aren't deemed "antique" and need to either be locked or deactivated completely. While I was @ a craft supply store with my wife, I noticed large shadow boxes which were designed to display things like signed hockey sticks and baseball bats, and thought a model 92' SRC would look pretty sweet displayed inside of one of these things, along with an old Hudson's Bay trade blanket, a stag handled bowie, and maybe an old leather ammo belt and empty cartridge boxes. I could anchor the gun through the back of the shadow box to a wall stud via a cable lock through the lever,so it couldn't be removed easily by a would be thief....that is if he actually got past the deadbolts and home security system in my house. Would this be legal enough for the powers that be?

The situation in the op would not work as the regs are written, depending on how you attached it to the rifle.

8. An individual may display a non-restricted firearm only if it
(a) is unloaded;
(b) is rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device or is in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into; and
(c) is not displayed with and is not readily accessible to ammunition that can be discharged from it.

I dont think removing the firing would meet the regs either as is says it has to be disabled by means of a secure locking device.

Fear not tho I have the perfect solution

No cables into the wall required.

Flintlock, big bore single shot rifle, or rimfire repeater pre-1898, are the options unless you are willing to either destroy the gun, or hang up a replica.

Better to hit some place that sells "western Decor" and buy a replica.

Or, you hang what you want up on the wall, and take your chances. Legal, nope. Done? Lots.

You can display the firearm with a secure locking device. Depending on the model of Winchester, a trigger lock won't work because when you open the lever, it will fall out. On a model 94, you can put the cable lock between the bar that pivots down with the lever and the action, and if it were long enough, attach it to an eye-bolt or screw as well. Sorry, even though it makes no sense, disabling by removing the firing pin doesn't meet the standard as written. You COULD remove the bolt (breech block), but that is a lot of work.
