Dispute over SMD-12 classification

Wouldnt that be like a sawed off to the law? Like altering the stock?

"rifles and shotguns that can be fired when their overall length has been reduced by folding, telescoping or other means to less than 660 mm (about 26 inches)"

The kicker is "by other means". But, if we go by the 870 precedent, installing a pistol-grip is not an "other mean".

Here is letter from CFC / RCMP:
Dear #########,
Thank you for your telephone call today with regard to the legal classification of the Remington 870 shotgun and the MCS system, ################################################xx ################################################xx ############. Short barreled pump action shotguns with folding stocks are controlled within the Criminal Code of Canada, and it specifically details that the firearm is reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by means of folding, telescoping or otherwise. The otherwise does not take into consideration replacement with commercially available stocks such as a pistol grip stocks. Thus it is very legal and does not change the class of a non semi automatic firearm if you put a manufactured short barrel and pistol grip on the gun.

I trust this response has met your needs, please feel free to call if I can be of any further assistance.

I enhanced the words that make a difference (at least in my understanding).

I didn't mean to bring you any bad news.

I sincerely hope that you (Scarecrow or Can-down or anybody) are the followers of unopistoleros and see the light when everybody else was blind.
Then, if it will fly, I will personaly buy you beer until you can't even seat on a chair.

Cheers

the rules for semi's are different, always have been. This is for 'everything else' guys. bolts, pumps, levers, that kind of stuff.

Thanks for the clarification,
The one handed operation of a short ,semi-auto, rimfire would force it into the pistol class.

I will have to study the act, but does that pertain to SA rimfire rifles? The 660mm rule is only for barrels being shortened. The rule is 657mm by folding or telscope or other.

That's what I'm doing right now, I study the CCC:D

The letter quoted in my previos post states "pump action" and "non semi automatic". Who knows, maybe even the letter over-restricts the possibilities.

no limit to semi auto rimfire barrel... only semi auto centerfire needs to be 18.5"+. lengh rules would be the same as the 870. but with lighter recoil and self loading would be harder to prove it wasn't to be used with one hand.

Well the 'one hand' thing is kind of something i threw out there based on some of our provincial laws.. it's not a hard and fast rule. But i think the fact it it would become challenging to say it's not a pistol.
