So basically I’m wondering on the legality of making my own fake suppressor for a handgun or rifle? Is it legal? Or should I not tempt the fates, my plan was to take an oil filter from a truck, gut the inside and weld a tube with 1/2x28 threads inside so there’s nothing to dampen the expansion of gas, wanted it for a sorta fallout/ zombie apocalypse 1911 build but I won’t attempt it till I know if it’s legal, thoughts ?

I see it as a good way of drawing un wanted attention and courts decided if it legal or not.

Very grey area and like Okay said will draw some serious unwanted attention. cut off the end opposite pistol so its an open cylinder with nothing in it may keep things legal, but its going to be loud...also then you'd have no sights to use.
BTW when mounting something like a suppressor on a pistol without a fixed barrel you require a recoil booster to keep the pistol working properly with enough inertia to overcome the extra muzzle weight...something to consider if you were to go through with this

I figured it would be a grey area, obviously the sights would be useless, it was more for a cool post apocalypse look than anything else and the 1911 I have in mind is a GSG 22lr with a fixed barrel, I’ve got a savage bolt action 22 I was going to “distress” and attach one to complete the fallout look also, I’m thinking this may be more trouble than it’s worth tho

Be careful that the dummy suppressor doesn't accidently reduce the sound of the firearm. Even a longer barrel (obviously with no baffles) is likely to make a firearm quieter. Even if it doesn't actually reduce sound at all, some officer may feel that it is "designed or intended" to do so. It doesn't have to be successful to be illegal.

Just buy a fake one from TNA....

Was a WWII anecdote - just screw a potato on end for one "quiet" shot - nothing on gun before, and nothing on gun after. Might suit your needs? I never tried it - might want to do that at least one time, first, before you need it. That story might be all B.S., or it might work.

What's the point of a fake suppressor? Serious question.

You are adding length and weight to your firearm, and potential for precision issues (if things past the bore aren't concentric), for no functional gain.

The reverse ones hide barrel length.... like this..

So what about sights? or you just go full on crack head and hold it sideways?
I'm old and think it's silly.
If it does not change the sound /db of the gun, no place for the gas to expand, then that's OK.
If the gas can expand, lower volume, that's when things go south.

I have not heard what happened with the fuel filter case (s) or oil filter adapters.

Plan was to run a laser sight on the bottom or just have the fake suppressor on for pictures and “cool factor” and take it off to actually shoot

Yeah that’s what I’m leaning towards now, I thought it would be cool to have an “oil can suppressor” but it won’t be worth the hassle

Suppose I can always distress it and add duct tape for the desired effect

Now it legal to have a fake suppressor. GSG 1911 can come with one. If you make it that the physical fake can stick out the end of the filter. Then nothing illegal. It's just gonna draw attention on the range if you show up with it on.

Didn’t they arrest someone in Canada that bought the oil can adapter from the states.

no, that dummy ordered 5 "filters" to his house, package was seized then he re-ordered. Used his name, cc, and home address for the parcel. Previous record of selling drugs. Got a warrant and raided his house to find more guns, drugs, ammo, etc.

OP, you tell me if it's illegal or not.
