Fellows,

I'm off on a moose hunt in a few days and suddenly find myself out of commercial water-based bore cleaner that I use in my two muzzle loaders. It's also all out of stock in town here.

It's too late to order anything on-line and get it in time for my trip, so I was wondering if anyone has had success with DIY/homemade bore cleaning solutions, for use in the field. I've read that simply warming up some water, or windex, and adding a few drops of dish detergent works fine, but I have never tried anything other than commercial bore cleaners.

Do fellows think I could mix up a 100ml squirt bottle of something like this and head out on my hunt in good shape?

Any other reccomendations?

I'm shooting 777 on this trip in a Traditions in-line 50 cal muzzle loader with 300gr SST sabots, if that means anything.

Thanks!

I use only genuine black powder and use only very hot water (not warm) for cleanup followed by some bore butter (either my homemade stuff or commercial stuff).

I use no water in my setup. 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and murphy's oil soap. I use a small squirt bottle to put it in.
Use to clean all metal parts then a final swab with alcohol, and then oil bore, parts etc. Works great for BP and it is fast to use.

Cleaning solution

I use auto wind shield washer fluid (the blue stuff) and add enough water soluble cutting oil ( made from Jojoba plant)to give it a milky appearance. Then a table spoon of Murphys oil soap is added to the container of washer fluid. I use it to clean black powder, Pyrodex and for cleaning after using corrosive ammo (7.62 x 39). It leaves a residue (don't worry its vegetable based) that protects metal. I still use some form of bore protector like bore butter just to be safe.
I use it by putting a tight fitting hose on the nipple at one end and putting the other end in a small container (its a good idea to weigh this end down). I then pore the solution down the barrel and when there is a couple of inches in the container I get a ram rod and a soaked patch and run it in and out of the bore.
This technique pushes the fouling out of the barrel and into the container. Then run some dry patches through and then a bore protector.

Cheers. Steve.
