russia having bitterly cold for half of the year , her troops are in heavy padded coats and gloves so i can understand why they designed their weapons with short stocks and narrow grips but i cant figure out why the czech made their grips narrow and short, too short for the average hands so when the FSN-01W came along with a standard longer grips , i wanted to change out most of the grips on my VZ but they arent available so i made them myself.
while i was at my local wood shop, i asked for scrap wood about 1" thick and i got 2 of these 1 1/8" oak pieces, which are perfectly suited to my needs.
i traced the grip with an inserted cleaning rod and then transfer the rod outline below the grip to the middle of the grip.
i had a spare trigger guard with a grip retainer which i used to constantly double check the fitment when i was shaping the top part of the grip.
1. first thing i did was to cut the outline with a jigsaw.
2. i drilled a 1/4" hole for the grip screw.
3. counter sink the hole with a 5/8" spade drill to about 1/4" deep to make space for the screw nut that protude at the bottom of the receiver.
4. i also counter sink a smaller 1/4" spade dill to the right for the a stud that also protrude at the bottom.
5. counter sink the bottom of the grip with 5/8" spade drill till the grip screw appears on top of the grip.
i used a rasp to get closer to the outline then i used a hand file on the upper part to fit the grip retainer .
once that is done then i worked at the bottom part with a rasp only , giving it curvature.
when im satisfied with the rough shape then i used a dremel round drum sander to smoothen the surface and then finally with a palm sander (180 grit)to smoothen out the bumps.
here it is the just before i apply the finish . the left is the original grip and the center two are a pretty close copies. i did some thing different to the far right grip after i screwed up on the trace, its narrower at the bottom and 1/4" longer .
i plan to leave the left in natural and the two on the right with red stain .
