russia having bitterly cold for half of the year , her troops are in heavy padded coats and gloves so i can understand why they designed their weapons with short stocks and narrow grips but i cant figure out why the czech made their grips narrow and short, too short for the average hands so when the FSN-01W came along with a standard longer grips , i wanted to change out most of the grips on my VZ but they arent available so i made them myself.

while i was at my local wood shop, i asked for scrap wood about 1" thick and i got 2 of these 1 1/8" oak pieces, which are perfectly suited to my needs.

i traced the grip with an inserted cleaning rod and then transfer the rod outline below the grip to the middle of the grip.

i had a spare trigger guard with a grip retainer which i used to constantly double check the fitment when i was shaping the top part of the grip.

P1100093.jpg

1. first thing i did was to cut the outline with a jigsaw.
2. i drilled a 1/4" hole for the grip screw.
3. counter sink the hole with a 5/8" spade drill to about 1/4" deep to make space for the screw nut that protude at the bottom of the receiver.
4. i also counter sink a smaller 1/4" spade dill to the right for the a stud that also protrude at the bottom.
5. counter sink the bottom of the grip with 5/8" spade drill till the grip screw appears on top of the grip.

i used a rasp to get closer to the outline then i used a hand file on the upper part to fit the grip retainer .
once that is done then i worked at the bottom part with a rasp only , giving it curvature.

when im satisfied with the rough shape then i used a dremel round drum sander to smoothen the surface and then finally with a palm sander (180 grit)to smoothen out the bumps.

here it is the just before i apply the finish . the left is the original grip and the center two are a pretty close copies. i did some thing different to the far right grip after i screwed up on the trace, its narrower at the bottom and 1/4" longer .

i plan to leave the left in natural and the two on the right with red stain .

ahhhh. How refreshing. You should have your own sub forum. Curtton's DIY's. It's nice to see something productive and new instead of....

Hey guys I just received my all new one of a kind SKS. I also purchased a limited edition tapco stock with a one of a kind tapco mag and super unique bipod. Stay tuned as I will be getting a custom made receiver cover scope mount and I will be putting it all together so you can see something completely new and amazing for the fourth time today.

HAHAHA.

The grips look amazing. I love the light color.
I was playing with retrofitting (read: hacksaw) some spare grips I have kicking around (dominion arms folding stock, butler creek, ar, tapco, everything here and there) for a bigger grip. Now I'm thinking I should try my hand at a little bit of wood work.

thanks fellas .

this would be my last wood project cos i will be moving to a condo soon , the construction of my condo is near completion so i wont have room for most of my stuff. :(

from left : standard red grip, original FSN-01W grip, copy with natural finish, copy with simulated red finish, my version with natural finish.

since i made the 3 grips on the right , i decide to install them on my 3 FSN.

the camera flash made the natural finish grips look lighter , it actually darker like the middle grip above.

I'm sure the itch will get to you and you will do something again. Mark my words. A diy'er like yourself won't stop.

Great work!!! I really like your version of the copy. I find a good belt sander can really help with these grips. it makes an awful dusty mess but it sure does get down to the workable areas in a hurry....just cant be too eager and sand too fast. It especially helps when forming the top to fit in the grip retainer. Super Job...I love these!!

Great work Curtton. i agree with ridgearms, you'll most likely find a way to continue these projects in a new place.

thanks fellas but to ensure i dont , i put up my cheap CT drill press for sale on EE .

ButtWhat : yes, i did ask myself if i didnt sell my belt sander several years ago , the job would be a breeze but i like the challenge with a palm sander.

thanks fellas .
