DNA costs are much less these days than they used to be.
I don't know how much it costs to identify DNA down to the individual, but my buddies are paying ~6$/sample to get it down to the species level.
I don't think that it was the DNA testing that broke the bank in this investigation, I'm sure there was plenty of old fashioned foot work!
Also, underfunded COs is a problem across Canada. When I think of the areas the guys cover in ON and NS and that the BC guys had their trucks effectively taken away at one point to save money I put the lack of effective enforcement due to underfunding pretty high in the pile of wildlife concerns across this country!
