Do any of you guys use a dirtbike instead of a quad?

I have a nice little 250cc dirtbike that I really enjoy when I go camping. There are times when I want to go out with a buddy in the middle of nowhere and do some plinking or some rabbit hunting. I never have done this because going by myself isn't always the most of fun, but now my brother just got a dirtbike of his own and we were thinking of taking a couple .22s or .410's into the bush.

Have any of you guys carried a rifle on your dirtbike? Is there such a thing (yea this might be stretching it) as a rifle/shotgun mount for a dirtbike?

I've seen them for quads and I didn't look into how much work it would be to make it work out on a dirtbike.

My buddy tried it a few years ago, it'd go almost anywhere a ATV could, but being a motocross bike it was loud, and in the end there's no way to pull anything out of the bush or carry much gear, and wasnt great once the ice/snow hit the ground.. He mounted a gun rack to the front fender, said it took a few rides to get use to but once he did it was np.

I used to just bungy it in a soft case across the handlebars on my dirt bike--same as my quad. Usually took a shotty in case of a bear encounter: hasn't happened yet in some twenty-odd years, but I felt better having it. You might be able to modify a leather equestrian or poly ATV gun-boot to mount on the side of your front shocks, if you have inverted sliders...

I've mounted a hard case for a quad to my front forks. Works fine.

dirt bike carry

In my younger days I used a dirt bike to access hunting grounds in the mountains a lot. Simply slung the rifle accross your back and go, never had a problem. make sure your sling and anchors are good. I would not go motocrossing like that but neither would i with anything strapped to the bike in any fashion.

get your self a copy of milititary macheanse international, red thru it till you find a guy who is selling off french harly davidsons send them an email and ask if they would sell you a carbine hoslter for a moto bike

I've hunted from my mountain bike with rifle on a boony-packer front carry sling. You'd be surprised how close you can pedal to game with this unfamiliar to them sound.

This is one of the guys in my moose hunting gang. He bought this little 85 Honda CT70 years ago. He wasn't going to bring it to camp and I told him it would be PERFECT for moose camp. It'll get everywhere he needs to go, costs nothing for gas, nothing to transport and the guys love ripping aroung on it at camp. It's quiet and comes with the ol Honda reliability.

Awesome advice, I'll have to check out mounting it to the front forks, although it seems that slinging it is the way to go.

Have any of you guys been stopped by RCMP? There are quite a few where we go making sure your ATV is insured, registered and that you havent been drinking. They have little checkstops on long weekends on the side of the road.

But as long as it's unloaded they shouldn't give me a problem?

Also I'm not racing, this is a 4 stroke bike so it's good for trail riding. The trails we take are usually only in first and 2nd gear anyways as they're usually heavy with brush, mud, etc.

And yea, I'd love to shoot where I parked, but it's illegal cause theres a road, and it's a campground...

Thanks for your help.

This was great to see! I have a minty Honda CT-90, the one with the high-low range transfer case. It's quiet, goes anywhere a quad will except mud, and gets a zillion MPG.
Anyway, someone makes a rifle scabbord that fits on the front forks of these things. May be adaptable to other bikes as well. I've seen them on greedBay and Google; just do a search under "Honda rifle" or some such and it should find it.

We brought my old yamaha scooter up to our moose camp for running the logging roads to different stands. I always kept the rifle strapped to my back, and am glad I did. I had to ditch/lay down the scooter a time or 2 and if my rifle was attached it might not have been so pretty.

I've got a couple honda CR250s that we use to run around the trails up north. They are loud, but once you get a hundred yards down the trail, you can't hear them. The bush really absorbs 2stroke noise. The 4 stroke racers are far louder, and the sound carries further. We see lots of grouse when riding, and the noise doesn't seem to bother them.

rokon

whay not try a rokon trailbreaker? i bought one last year and it will go places atv's won't. you can get them in olive drab, and there is a gun boot along with a few hundred accessories available. look up rokon on the web and you'll see what i mean.

I use a Suzuki Dr650 street and trail ( I'm 6'7, 235lbs and need a bigger bike. ) I like it, for exploring and hunting. I use a 2 strap sling and softcase, and keep my gear in an oversizebelly/fanny pack around the waist. I haven't pulled anything out of the woods yet, but the 650 should have the grunt I need, along with my homemade plastic drag sled.

What about one of those back packs that has a rifle holder built in? Would the gun hang down too low and get in your way while riding I wonder? That would be a pretty good set up for longer excursions. Lots of packs are set up for Camelback type bladders and you would have lots of room for ammo, lunch, dead birds and all kinds of good stuff.

+1 Did this last year, and surprised a nice buck right on the road. No I did not get him he bolted for the bush as I slung the rifle to ready:( Still, it was a great way to hunt, just wish it was not so loud.
