Do I need a 6.5PRC?

Thank you! Quite a bit...dunno why I had it in my head they were closer than that.

I bought a New REM M700 BDL in 1974 in 264 Win Mag for $264 plus tax from a gun shop going out of Business in Lumby BC I shot a couple of deer and one 4pt elk with it using 140 gr Horn Inlerlock bullets over H870 . It killed just like my 7 RMag with 139 - 154 Interlocks and my 270 Win with 130 Interlocks . It’s now a 7x300 WBee .
Anyhow a 264 Win Mag will get 100-150 fps over a 6.5 PRC 4Sure !

I think the NEW 7 PRC necked down to 6.5 will make a GREAT Cartridge . Will be just like a 264 Win Mag without a Belt . RJ

My first thought was "What does need have to do with it?"
If you want one, you want one, and until you have one and experience it first hand, you won't be able to answer the question for yourself...
And the fact that it carries more velocity and energy at longer distance (400 yards vs 300 yards) is comforting when an opportunity presents itself on a larger animal.

I like the 6.5s...always have... having spent more time with the 6.5 Swede than any other centerfire cartridge. Now have a LH Sako 85 Hunter that shoot better than 1/2" groups with factory ammo. Have a good supply of 140 gr AccuBonds to work up a load with.
Had one of the first 6.5CM is a Ruger Hawkeye when first introduced...and now have a Browning X Bolt All Weather rebarreled to 6.5CM because they decided not to produce it in LH. Shoots 1/2" groups or better with factory ammo (Hornady ELD-X and Federal Terminal Ascent). Performed very well on my red stag @ 296 yards, and fallow buck @ 267 yards and Arapawa rams @ 120 and 122 yards for the wife. She likes it so much, she bought her own LH Hunter in 6.5 Cm for our trip to Africa next year. Also have a good supply of 130 gr AccuBonds to work up a load with.

I am also interested in the 6.5 PRC, and am just waiting to take a LH X Bolt Hunter in 270 WSM to swap barrels with a 24" Wilson carbon fibre 6.5 PRC barrel. I had a 6.5x284 Norma, but am going PRC as I believe it will have better barrel life to get the same level of performance. Will see if it prefers 130 or 140 gr bullets. Although would prefer the 140s if larger game encountered, and mtn goats are tougher than mtn sheep. Some species just require more velocity/energy to immediately impress them.

I also like the 7mm's, and have a STW for more open terrain hunting if I need more reach and power (elk) that will shoot 1" groups @ 300 yards.
I like what I am reading about on the 7mm PRC...just not sure I will get one at this time as I still want to play more in the 6.5 arena.

Less chamberings, more doing things. It’s a good life mantra that applies well outside of rifles too.

Personally, I’ve been struggling to have less chamberings and agonize over those I can comfortably give up, rather than if I should add any. Usually, one gun I really like, that was available in only that chambering is the thorn.

I found LRP offered a bit more accuracy out of the Tikka 6.5 PRC that I used to own.
But they’re scarce as well

Yeah, I guess it's really not that much powder that mag primers are required...I will load some up with standard primers.

.

At the end of this season I’ll be down to 3 scoped centrefire rifles, with way more effective range time and shooting training.Edging further towards a less stuff centred servitude is freeing. I have never met anyone who simplified their life and shed the yoke of drowning under the volume of their stuff who regretted it. They wished they did it earlier. Better for their bodies, minds, finances, and the world

Good mantra sure, but no shortage of doing things around here. Another rifle here or there isn't going to change that any time soon. Will see how the 7PRC makes out (hopefully) moose hunting later this month before I do anything. Could maybe make the argument that a 6.5 PRC could take the place of a 6.5cm and 7PRC if downsizing is the goal but I don't really see that happening. The 7PRC checks a lot of boxes for my uses.

You might want it ... and that's definitely a legitimate reason to buy one. Nobody needs a 6.5PRC though, especially if you already have a 6.5cm, a 7prc and a 308win. It's a sales initiative - there was no "gap" in available chamberings that that round fills - they just needed a way to keep everyone spending his money on new stuff (again, which is fine, lol).
