Do I really need a .375 H&H ?

Yes JJ, I did 375 Ruger cases from 300 WM in W-W cases and it worked admirably and the W-W cases took loads that popped primers on the Horn brass. For this little rifle I picked up 500 X 416 Rem a bit ago, they are R-P cases but what the hell. I also managed to find a few hundred new W-W .375 H&H cases if I don't like the R-P cases. Didn't want to go beyond .375 with the 300 WM cases as the necks get too thin for good bullet tension and tend to split much sooner.
I got a pretty good deal on a Rem custom shop 458 a couple months ago and drew up and ordered my reamers from Dave @ PT&G and got them before Xmas, then I came down here for the winter and didn't have a lathe to work on, so I went to Calgary a couple weeks back and bought me a new lathe. Just finished the set up and wiring it in yesterday. Now I just went to town for some lighting over it and I'll have them up this aft so tomorrow I'll make guns, or bubba a good one, whatever.

Well the lights are over the lathe and working, I probably should have hired an electrician but I managed it. Tomorrow is the day.................I have the reamer to make dies too so that will be a bonus, having the correct dies right off the hop.

Load them up load them down it is a do eveything the great old 375 H&H it is a smooth shooter . As there is a lot of 375 now but none as smooth to shoot if you jump from there it has to be a 338 Lapua just for the reach as 2700 ft.lbs is a lot more than 1700 ft. lbs. at 500 yards so 800 is easy for the lapua .

Of course not, but..............you buy the reamer and another 458, and I can make it happen, Boomer.

I might take you up on that; we'll talk. But why do you think I should have both the .460 G&A and the over grown .45/70?? I'm sure I could get more versatility out of the .460; then again, if I kept this 1:12 barrel for shooting cast, I could get a 1:10 for the .460 . . . that'll add some torque to the recoil, and should solve the damn bullet yaw at impact!

Hmmm, my 375 Ultra will comfortably drive a 380 gr bullet at 2350, a .458 bullet with the same SD will weigh 567 grs, so a 550 Woodleigh should nudge 2400 from a longer barrel, and a 450 gr Swift of North Fork could make 2500. Tell me again, why is it that I'm broke all the time?

Still a very safe bet Kevan, there's only one Dogleg out there so how many medium and big bores could he really shoot out in one lifetime..........LOL

Ordered an M70 Alaskan in .375 this morning from Cabelas, there's only one left if someone wants it. My CZ is sitting at my gunsmith's with no barrel, and that just leaves me with the Custom shop Remington being operational at the moment. That's a forlorn, sore stomach feeling not unlike that empty feeling a kid gets when he just lost his jack-knife.:( I don't want to move, and being one rifle away from banishment is cutting it a little too close.

Besides, I've got a soft spot for M70s and the African does weigh a bit much for a .375.

Cool! A new .458-caliber cartridge! Will it provide the same performance as the WinMag, in the same length action, while being more difficult and more expensive to buy and/or load?

Oh, yeah! Presenting: ....(drumroll.....)...the .458 Gatehouse!

c-fbmi, why not continue forward with the project that Kevan's brother began? A short-action version of the .505Gibbs...maybe the .505Giblet?

Seriously, a .50-cal would make a neat little plinker/hunter. A light, handy little bolt gun that produces great big holes, with a nice throaty boom. It could be a grown-up version of the Ruger .44mag bolt gun. Gatehouse would hate it. That alone would spur many people to get one! :)

How about a .500 B&M? A shortened Ultra-mag case that will run in a short action, or just leave it full length and call it a .500 MDM.

I would be very interested in hearing more about this M70 Alaskan as I too have a soft spot for Model 70s.
My old 602 is no lightweight, on the scale its about 9 lb. 10 oz., but I've never noticed it.... packed it all day for 10 days last year without a problem.
However, I'm not getting any younger and the hills seem steeper lately...

My .458 African Express weighs almost exactly the same as my CZs on a scale, but the way the M70 balances and handles you'd never believe they weighed the same. I had a buffalo cull hunt planned and booked with my .416 that I've shot and hunted a lot. In the meantime the M70 .458 showed up and it felt like I'll owned it my whole life. The CZ stayed home, and the Winchester has pretty much retired it for good.

The paper specs on the Alaskan don't show a big difference in weight versus the African, but the reviews I've seen sure do. I'm a little curious myself.

Kevan, I'll send you a seven pound 9.3X62. You can carry it with some of your 325 gr loads. :)

OK, so after starting this thread I went ahead and bought the .375 H&H that I had my eye on. I'm just waiting for some pieces to show up so I can load up some ammo and try her out.

I have some older Model 70 rifles, but I've got to say...this new one is really nicely made...great fit and finish and one of the nicest factory triggers I've ever felt. According to my scale the rifle weighs just under 8 lbs.

Here she is...the Winchester Model 70 Alaskan .375 H&H...looks like a KING to me!

Very nice. Looking forward to range reports.

BongoBob that is very nice, smooth, clean lines.
There is something special about a Mod. 70 Winchester, sort of timeless in style.
Mine is coming back in a couple weeks ( not a 375 ) but I'm anxious to shoot it again, very anxious...
Thanks for sharing the pictures and we look forward to updates from you...
