Do I really need a .375 H&H ?

i don't need a 375 h&h but i own one. recoil is a big push not sharp at all. for range play the sierra 250bt is the hot ticket. my 8 mag is far sharper in the recoil department.

I went with a 375ruger Alaskan. I went with what the gun offers more then the calibre. I like the Rger because its different. I don't like the 375H&H because of the people that try to defend the rounds claim to "king". their only argument is that it has history. I am the kind of guy to make my own history not blindly follow others. just my opinion.

I think the .375 Ruger seems like a decent cartridge, and is probably here to stay.

I would state that following others with an appreciation of their accomplishments is not following blindly. The argument is not so much that the .375 H&H has 'history', but that it has over one hundred years of proof and testimonial!

So OP what rifle are you gonna get? Now that it's certain you NEED a 375!
Lots of nice options. My first 375 was a CZ, then a ruger Alaskan both got sacrificed for other priorities. Now I have a winchester safari express. It is my favourite of the 3 I've had. Nothing against the CZ or Ruger but the winchester seems to fit me better. Sako has some nice looking options in 375 as well, unfortunatly I haven't had the opportunity to hanle any.

I have nothing against the Ruger or any other .375...I know they are all very potent options. This is more of a nostalgia trip for me, and the H&H is a very "storied" and "old school" cartridge. I'm sure that no animal I might shoot with the H&H would know the difference between any of the .375s anyway!

As for which rifle...I have a private sale lined up on an unfired Winchester M70 Alaskan...all I have to do is say yes and send the man his money and it's mine.

The beauty of the buying and selling of rifles like this is that you can usually sell the thing if it doesn't work for you without too much of a loss. If I really love the H&H I might just sell the .338 WM (a Rem 700 BDL DM that I really like...shoots great, very accurate etc) as it would basically become redundant in my collection, but I probably won't...I never seem to sell any of them!

I'd say that the argument for the H&H is that it has the proof and testimonial AND the history. To lots of folks, all three are important. Admittedly, buying something for its nostalgic appeal is not logical...but neither is buying it just because it's new and different. In fact, given that the two are ballistic equivalents and perform identically, buying the one whose future is less certain makes even less sense...if you insist on logic. Fortunately, logic is optional in this type of decision-making. :)

OP, congrats on your new illogical and redundant toy! :)

Ok, I know "need" is a relative term and "want" is really all the justification anyone needs as long as you can afford the thing(s) you want.

I have always wanted a .375 H&H. There's just something about the cartridge that has always called to me. I have shot one several times, and witnessed how effective one can be on a moose...pretty much the definition of "bang - flop"! That being said, I've had the same results with my .338 WM every time.

I suppose I already have the bases covered for anything I'll ever hunt in N America (I don't hunt any bears) with a .223, 7mm RM, 30-06, .35 Rem and the .338 WM, but for some reason I still want a .375 H&H...am I being unreasonable?

YES
the only rifle I hunt with.
235 Grain Barnes Triple-Shock - Great for White Tail, Black Tail, great ballistic
270 Grain Hornady Dangerous Game SUPERFORMANCE - Great for deer, elk
300 Grain Norma Solid Ammunition - Moose, Black Bear, Grizzly
350 Grain Woodleigh Weldcore Jacketed Soft Point, Grizzly and Safari hunting
So as you can see, one gun, just different rounds
Go and have fun

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! ;) LMAO the old 375 H&H has prob shot and killed more game in a month then all of the 375 Rugers put together ever ! :HR: :bangHead:d:h::p

The Real King is still the 375 H&H ! :dancingbanana: Cheers RJ

That is simply due to the years the 375H&H has been around, but does not mean it is a superior round. It would be like saying the beaver has done the most puddle jump flying, there for, your new awesome float plane that out performs the beaver is no good, simply because it has not done as many flights. Despite the fact, it outperforms the beaver on every flight it has done.

I don't think anyone is saying there aren't more powerful 375s out there than the H&H, like the RUM, Wby, 375 and 378, it's just that it is hard to do it better than the H&H. Your analogy is perfect, there are more modern and efficient float planes out there, Pilatus Porter comes to mind, but does it really do anything better than a beaver. Like the old grey haired H&H, the beaver is legendary and nearly as grey and is also very hard to beat as the best all around float/bush plane. Have you ever flown one or a Pilatus Porter or are you just conjecturing.........
