Do I really need a .375 H&H ?

Nope Sheep, an old mare for a rug, and then a nice running shot on a younger stud for a pedestal mount. Look how sharp and crisp his lines are compared to the old mare, especially on the face, he should make an outstanding pedestal mount.

Weird that there is no shadow stripe on the one. The one is a typical looking Burchell's but the other kind of looks like a Greves. Interesting stuff.

Problem with a .375 H&H is once you have one, you don't need any other rifles, so it makes new purchases more difficult to justify. This is a risky path and you've been warned.

In spite of the reloaded diversity of the .375 H&H, everyone needs a .22 and .308 centerfire of some sort (.223 Rem and .308 Win for most)... If for nothing other than frugality of components... And of course a rimfire and 12 gauge...

Oops... No intention of starting another of "those threads."

Following c-fbmi's lead, my .375 H&H resume, by no means comprehensive missing plenty, and I'll collect a half dozen more head of African game with the cartridge beginning next week. It's literally the perfect single cartridge, for my uses.

What a NICE collection of TROPIES you guys and to think you were able to it with just a 375 H&H - Do you think you would have killed them deader with a 375 Ruger though ! LOL :p ;) :HR:

Cheers RJ

Probably not but they wouldn't have been killed less dead either! I realize that everyone has their favorite and it's mostly in good fun but it's funny to see guys brag about or put down the two .375's when for all intended purpose they have identical ballistics.

Indeed, indistinguishable performance from the two as of course they move the same projectiles at the same speeds. My side of the highly academic argument advocates the higher magazine capacity, much better availability, and severe conditions benefits of the H&H's case. The order side advocates the far cheaper rifles available in .375 Ruger, on account of it fitting in a standard action. Both sides have their points, buyers are fortunate to be able to select what parameters are most attractive to them. Effectiveness one round for one round compared however? Absolutely indistinguishable of course.

Exactly. If anything, yours and C-fbmi display of impressive trophies only shows what can be accomplished with the .375 Ruger since, again, they have the same ballistics.

When the ballistics are comparable, you look next at the logistics. There is still a clear winner on that score.

Yep Dogleg, and don't let's forget about the sh!t Hornady brass which is all that's available for the Ruger...........and no need to bring up Nosler, cause Nosler don't make brass, they buy and repackage........it's still garbage Hornady brass, sorry !!!
I really don't know all the companies that make brass and loaded ammo for the 375 H&H (THE TRUE KING), but I would have to say virtually every ammo company in existence today........that tells me all I need to know.

Now that could be debated considering all the grief my boy has had with his 375 Ruger brass.......several opportunities could have been lost due to sticky brass issues. Something that does not happen with the H&H design and W-W brass or even R-P brass for that matter.

I beg to differ with post # 21, my 375 H&H is more accurate than three 375 Rugers that I played with over several years, and until Ruger quality control improves, I wouldn't touch another one at any cost...
As for recoil itself, both my Alaskans and an African had sharper, nastier recoil than my 375 H&H, much more than any 30-06 I have ever shot....[
he must live in Pemberton as 375 buger is the new king the H&H is a smoothy loaded from 46gr. imr 4895 with 220 hornady to full case 4350 with 300g. the best of it all the 375s the only gun if hade to have only one it would be a 375H&H

i am into it this way there are so many beautiful guns out there in the 375H&H why would i want a paddle if i am not duck huntting and ammo everwhere for the H&H... live and let live my kids shoot savages as they say they are like empty beer cans when done there are more for sale .. I like nice guns it is a age thing i am thinking

Its pretty hard not to like the .375 bore size or the .375 H&H ballistics. I don't mind the the .375 Ruger after shooting my pal's Ruger Alaskan. I load his ammo, and he prefers 260 gr ABs and wants them loaded a bit below maximum, so we haven't run in to the sticky brass situation with Hornady brass. When I decided I would go with the .375 Ultra, after considering then rejecting the .378 Weatherby due to the cost of brass, it was to get .375 H&H long barrel ballistics from a 20" barrel, which I did with a bit of room to spare. A 300 gr XLC skipped along happily at 2600, but where the Ultra really shines is with 380 gr bullets, where even with its short barrel, it bested the H&H by 150 fps when shooting both across the same chronograph at the same time.

I'll have a new .375 to play with this summer, but rather than another big case fire snortin dragon, this one is a .375 Scovile, sometimes incorrectly referred to as a .375-06, but in reality is a 9.3X62 opened up slightly to .375. The chamber reamer is kinda cool, allowing for the .30/06 case head size, but with the head to shoulder length of the 9.3X62. Actually this rifle was supposed to be a 9.3X62, but Ron Smith apparently doesn't make a .366 barrel, but he does make a .375, and the one I had on my Ultra shot like a varmint rifle, so the math was simple. I expect a 270 gr TSX will run about 2500 fps, which is what I got with a 270 gr bullet in the .366 Wagner, which should prove more than adequate for bear repellent, either here or in the Yukon.

Having received my .375 Ruger only a few weeks ago I haven't a chance to start reloading for it yet. But I have been all over the internet searching for everything .375 Ruger and after reading posts on dozens of forums, magazine articles, etc.... I don't recall anybody having bad experience with the Hornady brass.
