Hey guys,

Im debating with myself if i should get into .40S&W with a Norinco Np58. I have the 9mm Np22 that i do like to shoot a bit but im not a huge fan of the Sig P22X platform. I know its not a huge investment but i figure we dont have many reason here to shoot .40 over 9mm since well, added stopping power is sadly not a concern for us. I have both 9mm and .45ACP handgun and i must admit i really like shooting .45 more than 9 simply because recoil feel more like a strong push rather than a snapy fast round (and 1911 ergo fit me better but its not the question)

People who shot all three caliber how would .40 compare between 9 or 45? Is it worth it since it will only be used for plinking? Or does saving for a nicer quality 45 or 9 pistol make more sense?

And before anyone say to try it i have not met anyone yet at my local range who use .40 so as much as i would like its not really an option.

I personally would pass on the Norinco in any cartridge at any price. Personal preference. I have owned and shot 9, 40 & 45. I don't really care for the .40 S&W. I would save up for a better quality handgun in 9mm or .45 ACP.

I find full power loads with 40 S&W to be snappier than 9mm or 45 acp. That's pretty much all I shoot through my 40, and after shooting a box, a 9mm feels really light in recoil. 45 definately rocks the pistol, but it doesn't feel as snappy or jarring at 40 S&W. But I must add that the 9mm is an NP22, the 40 is a S&W M&P and the 45 is a 1911. So, also very different guns, so it isn't an apples vs apples comparison. But I have shot a 9mm glock, and that feels fairly light in recoil. The 40 I find I have to really grip it tight to prevent shifting of the gun in my hands. The 9mm I can really loosen up my grip.

Snappier recoil than the 9mm and .45. More pricey ammo than the 9mm. Heavier wear on gun. Lower resale value if you choose to get rid of it down the road.

The only pros I can think of is it’s easier to find your brass when you clean up at the range and your .40 mag might seat a few more 9mm rounds depending on your gun.

I have all 3 calibers. I only shoot the .40 and .45 when I have company who want to try them. Other than that, it’s 9mm all the way.

Paper won’t care.

If you reload and have access to cheap (or free) .40 brass, it makes a nice reason to own one. You can load some very soft .40 rounds to shoot at the range and still make the power requirements for games or just plinking/target practice . If you don't, I would stick with 9mm for all the reasons listed above.

You really should give them a try for the price they are quite okay. I actually shoot better with my norinco Np22 in 9mm than some top tier manufacturer pistol i tried (CZ, M&P, FNH etc...)

i dont have access to large supply of brass and i only have a single stage reloading press so for the time i put id rather reload .45ACP since i enjoy it quite alot and the saving are nice. I think i will wait if i have some fund loose at a latter point or just wait for someone with one to let me try it. These norinco seems to be on sales quite often anyway. Most people opinion seems to be that its not really worth it

Yes. Because everyone needs more guns.

Yes thats for sure, but what would you rather have if you could only have one? A new cheap .40S&W pistol in the same style and frame than your cheap 9mm or a brand new good quality handgun in 9mm?

I would say for shooting pleasure, don't just duplicate what you have in 40. Its not worth the bother.

My suggestion is go for something completely different, like a 1911 in either 9mm or 45. 1911's can be made to shoot really well on a budget. The trigger is can be made really good for not much money. Go for 45 is you want the big bore experience, otherwise go for 9mm for cheap factory ammo.

Honestly, if you prefer the feel of the recoil on your 45, a 40 is going to be even worse than the 9 in that regard. On top of that, if you don't like the sig 22x platform too much, why would you buy another one?

Sounds to me like you need to buy another 45 if anything... Or a wheel gun. Those are cool too!

Another 45 is already on the list but i was wondering if .40 was fun enough to be worth it to delay. I see people praising the 10mm everywhere so i figured .40S&W must be similar. From the look of it nobody really carry a torch for this particular round. A wheel gun is on the list too but way down. One of the older guy at the range made me shoot his S&W Model 17 (if that even exist i didnt notice exactly what gun it was) and it was a nice shooting gun.

I have a Norrinco 1911 in .45 and i really enjoy it. The duplicate is mostly because the cheap norrinco pistol are both the same model for 9 and 40. If they had something different in 40s&w id be way more interested.

Didn't Norinco make a cz copy for a while in 40?

I did a quick search and you are right the Np40, i could not find any for sale at most of the sponsor tho. Maybe they were discontinued i have no idea.

Edit: Review are also non-existant. Huh thats curious

Some people like the .40 and others don't. I like my .40

I've got the np58 and it's honestly one of my favorite pistols to shoot. I sold my first one and regretted it so much I bought another, which works as good as the first 1000+ rounds with no malfunction whatsoever.

Sfrc has them for $299 free shipping, and 15% off right now, so $255+tax shipped to your door. Can't see you being unhappy with it..

I say get a .40. I find it to be a challenging caliber to shoot well. So I shoot it more.

It's an easy caliber to reload if you choose to do so.

If not, when the next 9mm ammo shortage surfaces you'll always have available ammo.
