...when someone comes and asks for something complicated (like the purchase of a new gun) 10 mins before close, i always get kinda annoyed...having to work even 5 minutes longer after your supposed to be done just plain sucks.
it was the 10 min before closing time thing,,
...It would drive me nuts when people would walk in 10 until closing and expect to purchase a rifle, do the transfer on line, mount a scope and boar sight it.
I think this may be a problem with some business that operate today. Maybe it's a younger generation thing.
Through my whole childhood, my father ran an archery business out of our house. He'd be up at 5am fletching arrows before going to work at his other full time job so that guys could come pick them up. Sometimes, a guy would show up at 9pm and buy a crossbow, and would leave at 11pm with it assembled, string tuned, and scope mounted.
You know what? He sold a lot of arrows and crossbows. Every customer was gained through word of mouth and repeat business. He became so well known for amazing customer service that guys would bypass other places and drive for hours to get their stuff. There were internet/mail order customers buying from all over Canada and the US, Britain, Australia, Germany, and beyond.
The lesson to be learned? People notice when you go the extra mile for your customers, and they repay you tenfold with free advertising and repeat business.
If it comes down to an employee not getting paid what they think they should earn, well... are you getting paid for that extra half hour? You could always get a job you hate making more money. Or, you could take pride in yourself and the job that you do and do it well. When employers see things like forum posts saying "I went in looking for a rifle and walked out with nothign because the guy at the counter was a d!(&, well, maybe that has somethign to do with your apparently unfair wage.
The old timers, as well as anyone that runs their own business, already know this.
