Do you consider this doable?

I read this thread last night so I thought I would give it a try while I was out today. After bedding and relieving several areas in the stock I finaly got my new LRPV do put 5 under an inch... so I flung a few free hand.

Shiloh #1, 45 2 1/10, 60 grs Swiss 1 1/2 Fg, 535 gr. MT Chambers boolit, WLR primers, SPG lube, Walters wad. Will hit an 8" gong with OPEN sights as long as you can handle the recoil. Oh, sorry, that's at 200 meters.

Later........

That's some nice off hand shooting @ 200. I'm not there yet.

BTW, not to derail the thread, but how did you get Swiss 1 1/2 Fg in Canada?

Chris.

It is rare to get a bipod shot on game. At least anywhere that I hunt. There is usually bushes, or grass in the way. Don't get me wrong, get the most stable position you can, just don't assume that the shot will come from a stable position.

Where I hunt,it is rare that I can't shoot off of a knee,or rest on a fencepost,or lean against a tree,or when hunting pronghorn,use a bipod.

I was at the range today working up loads for my 22-250 and my 325wsm. Here is 11 shots from my 325 at 100 yards. The book is 4 1/2 inches.

The lower group is from a 22-250.

Tried it last week with my 243 in a 77 Mk II, and yep, it can be done.:D

Normally my hunting allows for me to rest on something though, usually the side mirror on my truck.:nest: (just a joke, before i get crucified)

Should be no trouble with a little practice but it would shock you that there are a large number of avid hunters who couldn't. Benchrest shooting is for sighting in and load development, shooters don't practice field positions enough(me included). Does wonders for your confidence too.

From your feet, with your "typical hunting rifle', try putting 5 rounds into a 8" bull at 100 yds. No sling, no other supports.

"Typical hunting rifle": A standard configuration hunting rifle like a Ruger 77R, Rem 700CDL, Model 70 FWT, Savage11/110 or Sevens 200, with a scope or not, not exceeding 10lbs.

IMHO if someone can't do this then they should not be hunting.

I agree with those who say 5 in 8" from 100 yards offhand is a minimum skill level to be considered competent.
I have a private range and an 8" gong set up at 100 and a 18" gong set up at 250. Should be about the same difficulty, but I can hit that 8" gong all day long, but less than half my offhand shots hit the big gong. I think that wind and psychology are the main culprits.
I did shoot a skandinavian running moose target once with a group of about 20 hunters who were taking a moose hunting seminar. I was one of only three hunters who put all three shots in the vitals. That was a real eye opener about how badly prepared most hunters are. Some forgot to load a shell into the chamber. Some forgot how to operate the safety. Most couldn't reload from the shoulder, and dismounted each time they worked the action. Some flinched so bad that their eyes were closed before they jerked the trigger.
I read about some shooting ranges that will not allow any shooting except from a bench. Shooting from a bench is not practise, that is sighting in......

I have only once been able to use a position other than standing, or kneeling when shooting big game. It would be nice.
The territory where we hunt, is such that game appears and disappears at close range, withing seconds. As such, I do practice offhand alot. Easily 90% of my game animals were taken standing probably 98%.

Can I put my shots into eight inches? Yes, scope or not.

I think I've only ever shot 2 or 3 animals from a rest...Mostly all free-hand shots, out to 200yds...

Just to add a note that this isn't a big deal for folks that shoot the metallic silhouette event and do well at it.

I have only really gotten interested in the longer distance shooting with rifles recently. But from what I'm reading about it and from my own experience good off hand shooting at ranges of 100 yards and out is as much a skill as shooting handguns for good groupings at 25 and 40 yards. And any skill only peaks through practice.

Didn't read the post through, just have the first thing that came to mind.

100 yards, 5 shots, 8 inch gong.

I think if you can't do that, you shouldn't be hunting and should stick to the range.

Either that or blind hunt with bait and buy the biggest gun you can. (any maybe wear a black cowboy had and a red bandana haha.)

Very doable. Although, I'm not much of a fan of off-hand shots for hunting regardless. A good rest or sitting position ensures a good shot, and IMO a better rest should be taken whenever available.

From a knee, prone, off of an improvised rest or bipod, all are options.

In my area of hunting those positions are not often used when hunting big game. I took for granted that other people hunt the same way that I do. But I do suppose some people strictly hunt from stands and benches. But geez, unless you're physically unable, you should be able to make that shot all day.
