:cool:So here it goes, where can I get a "real" Ar-15 and what is best? I plan on keeping my gun forever so I don't want to pick up crap and have issues and I sure don't want to get into selling and trading up I just want to save and buy the dam thing right-Once (A friend bought a bushmaster and had a ton of issues). That being said I Know not all Ar-15 rifles are made the same. Fit & finish, Metal quality, barrel twist etc goes into it ...I know all these components matter, but what is best and what specifications work well together...ie. " 18 inch heavy bbl works well with a 1/8 twist vs 12 inch med profile barrel works well with a 1/7 twist"...I THINK? Which guns go through which testing and how are they ranked? Are the rifles we receive in Canada different from the ones LEO and CF boys get...please don't say FA ..I KNOW ... Example- Bushmaster xm15 E2s ... I know these guns are not Nitro Proofed steel and there are 1/9 twist not 1/7 twist as well a 223 chamber not 5.56 etc... How do I know if the extractor, bolt, springs, and this, and that is all "good AR-15" quality??? There are so many to choose from???...LMT, RRA, STAG ARMS( modle 8 pretty cool), SABER, COLT, Bushmater etc ....? I know colt makes the mil stuff but is the ones civilians buy the same quality?

And please don't say the hk416 (because it is not a hk 416 that is available to us)

Also anyone stock or import LWRC gun's?

I have an LMT MRP and love it. High quality and great fit and finish. Few thousand rounds through it so far and not a single problem.

If you want super expensive/higher quality look at some of Knights Armament's stuff too, granted anything from them will put a major whole in your wallet.

I ended up choosing LMT and have been really pleased the decision.

Cheers.

I have LMT, Daniel Defense, and RRA AR's and the LMT and DD are certainly nicer fit and finish and have better quality control. RRA and Stag are both good alternatives though.

If your looking for a piston like the LWRC, you can have a look at the H&K MR223... It is the semi auto version of the 416..

It has a hefty price tag, but it's a nice rifle..

The 'chart' is misleading and inaccurate -even if you happen to be buying in the US market. It's worse when you're not buying in the US market. MR223- exceptionally nice rifle but - not really an AR.

The "Chart" is wildly inaccurate. Like totally inaccurate. Means 0.

Well not entirely, but not a very good gauge of the makes and models available here in Canada.

Not to mention that there are a lot of features listed that don't really matter, and a few that do matter, which aren't listed.

Mil quality does not mean best. Just means within spec of the contract that won.

Honestly, in the AR field, there is soooooo much bling and internet "its awesome" to wade through. Many of those that post the "its awesome" don't have a single wear pattern on a rifle to back up their claims. Not a shot at those above by any means. Just an observation from other forums.

The best thing I can recomend is find your local shooting club. Find those that you can trust, and ask then what truely works. Buy that.

An AR is a barrel, a bolt carrier, and some human interface components as best as I can tell. The human interface parts are interchangeable. If you want resale value, buy brand name. If you want performance in a rifle that you will shoot until you die and pass on to your kids, buy what is known and demonstrated to work.

Are the magnum parts awesome? Sure. But does the above average 100 rnds per week shooter need them? For the most part no.

If you were farther out west, I'd offer you my standing offer of buy factory ammo and come to a match. Shoot first, buy later. in TO, though, I am not 100% sure where to send you. Hopefully a local range head will spew similar dribble at you though.

Just a non-brand/bling-specific rant.

BTW, I mostly shoot a Remington R15 because it is the only AR I could buy locally when I got into ARs. I would say that it has been exceptional from a shooters perspective inspite of being factory coated in what has been described as "baby poop".

What you are going to do with it? Multiple roles? What is your budget for the rifle alone?
How much do you plan on using it?

Not knowing any of the above, but best guess would be something from RRAs lineup I think is best bang for the buck....

If you're fine with a 20" barrel get a Colt Hbar. Used around $1200 or so. Then spend the rest of your funds on a sh!tload of ammo. Good to go;)

Since you plan on keeping it forever, I'd recommend either building it yourself or having a reputable company do it for you. I went that route (well, put the parts together anyhow) after owning several AR's (I still own them :D). The result is a thing of beauty that I highly cherish and would never sell...has all the markings of family heirloom if there ever was one.

I have an LMT CQB/MRP piston carbine. It's very nice.

that being said, If I was just buying today, I'd probably get the Stag piston carbine for much less $$$

I've owned and used Demico, colt ,RRA ,Stag , Armalite ,Bushmaster and adams arms. I curranty own a 16" RRA and a 10" adams arms piston conversion(adams arms pistion kit and upper reciver and rra barrel.). I've had no issues with any of them (having fired 1000 + rnds through all of them)and my personal feeling was one was not better than the other. Just my 2 cent, others may argue.
