Do you really need a magnum

You NEED a magnum to explode ground hogs to the level I'm satisfied, that's why I love my 338 Lapua. If you'd handicap me with a non magnum round I'd use my 308 with 178gr ELDX at 2900 fps, this combo outshoot any factory 3006 ammo and has less recoil.

This kind of ballistics are more like a 308 Norma magnum handload.

More important then a MAGNUM is a Good Quality Bullet ( projectile) and Most Important is the Bullet placement into the animal ! Get this Right and ALL is Good ! Most Std calibers will get the job done Finely ! That Being said - Magnums do have there Place with the right bullet too ! jmo RJ

All the gobbltygoop about ballistics, range extention, recoil, energy, etc. has nothing to do with which cartridge is better or worse than another when it comes to wanting to own and shoot a certain cartridge !

Agree^^^, my dad decided a few years back he wanted a fierce 338 Lapua mag to shoot Québec moose at 100 yards…. He put a Buriss eliminator electronic scope thing on it and he’s happy! Does he need that? Hell no!! Does it make him happy? For sur !!

It's sort of like shot-guns in a way. Even though I have some chambered for 2 3/4" 12 Gauge there isn't a whole lot of logic in it if you're only going to have a couple. You can always go down from 3", but you can't go up from 2 3/4"

You actually can, Ganderite had a thread on modifying 3" shells with a ceramic hole saw to work in 2-3/4" guns.

It's not directed at you, but a lot of nonsense gets passed around about shooting and shotguns, most people never pattern their guns. Another one is sectional density.
