All things being equal (gun type, bullet design, factory ammo velocity), does a 300 Weatherby have a real advantage over a 300 Win Mag/300 WSM in your opinion?

Real world difference, not what it says on paper

Discuss...:)

The .300 Win Mag can efficiently kill game at very long range, I mean +500 yards. How much farther do you want to shoot?

There is no real reason to get a .300 Wby over a .300 WM, IMO.

300Mags

First you have to look at the fact that all rifles send a bullet out the end of a certain size and speed.
100-200 fps is just not enough of a difference on animals.
However on paper it seems impressive.
Also the result is of all this is recoil.
If one stock design handles the felt recoil to the shooter better this may be the best one to buy.
Otherwise it really is up to the purchaser.

300 weatherby magnum has the capacity to push a 220gr bullet around 100 fps on average (muzzle velocity) faster than the 300 win mag.

The real proof in the pudding is in the heavy bullets as it relates to belted magnums.

That variation is not sunstantial enough for me to say that the performance is preferable to the 300 win mag. Terminal Ballistics have proven that for hunting a faster bullet is not necessarily a better bullet.

Remember that bullets must retain some mass when passing through the animal in order to create a substantial wound channel. Super Fast bullets (in general terms) = higher copper fouling issues and barrel wear.

Reloading supplies are also cheaper not to mention more available with the .300 winmag.

Good Luck!

Let me ask you this Tod...Which would you feel more secure holding in your hands facing an aggressive 1000 lb bear, a 300 Win with a 220 gr bullet or a 300 Weatherby with that same bullet.:)

My 220gr Partition load CHRONOGRAPHS at 2858fps out a a 24" barreled .300 WM. The top Weatherby load in the Nosler manual gives a CLAIMED 2827fps out of a 26" barrel. The factory 220gr Weatherby loads move at a claimed 2845fps out of a 26" barrel.

So, I think I'll do just fine with the .300WM. :D

I have never had a desire to own any Weatherby cartridge, really.

Howeve,r the 300 Weatherby came prior to the 300WM, and when it came out, it had a real advantage over the 30-06 and 300 H&H of the time.:)

Hold on a minute, you are comparing a chrono'd velocity to a listed one???? That's hardly all things equal.

My Nosler 5th lists the 300 Win 220 gr at a top velocity of 2757 but the majority don't reach 2700 fps. Wby tops at 2840. You are right about the 24" barrel.

Maybe the 220 was not the best bullet for an example but you should be able to push the Wby...with all things equal, up to 200 fps more with the 180 gr X's hand loads. I've loaded for both.

Facing a charging bear, 200 fps/500 ftlbs may not make much of a difference but it would make me more confident.:D

I've only brought up an exception and not a preference. Either one will get the job done.

Exactly, either will get the job done. My load is not in the manual. I use H1000 and it works like a dream. My point was that I have safely surpassed the maximum listed velocity (which I have found to be optimistic in most cases) for the weatherby using the 220gr partition, so I don't really see the "real world" advantage of the wby. That is why I voted "no real advantage";)

But hey, TB is being a sh*t disturber for even posting this question!:D

And niether is ideal for the situation you list, IMO. In stead of going faster a fellow needs to go bigger and heavier, like a .375 or .416 and then you'd see a difference!

Well you cannot argue case capacity and velocity.... the Weatherby is faster... it will shoot flatter... and it will have more energy.
It will also kick harder... burn more Powder/money... and being more overbore than the winnie it will wear a barrrel quicker.
I would suggest the 300WM is more efficient than the 300WTHBY and the 300WSM is even more efficient than the 300WM.
So in the REAL WORLD Bartell failed at not including the 300WSM in this comparison. Prolly just to piss off Gatehouse.

I have a .300WSM, and am happy with it. I chose it becuase .308 has been around forever, and there must be some improvement over it.
I do not feel the need for a "full size magnum" rifle. Too much powder, too much kick.
I will try and place my shots better, rather than firing a cannon.

No real world difference. I'd tell you the same is true of the 308 and 30-06 as well, but yikes....

Since we're talking real world, you have to include such things as price, availability and afordability. All areas where the Weatherby doesn't particularily shine.
Add to that the fact (IMO) that the ballistic difference isn't worth howling about.
I'll take the Winchester.
When are you sending it Todd? :D
