Does AK furniture fit the Type 81?

There are a lot of parallels between the AK platform and the T81 but, obviously, not everything is the same. I'm looking into modifying the furniture on the T81. Do AK handguards and grips fit? Is it possible to remove the stock of the T81 and put on a different AK stock?

There are literally no parallels to the AK. Hence why its NR.

Gnutzguy on utube has good videos showing how to modify AK mags and vz58 furniture to fit the type 81. I have a fairly detailed video on utube on how to fit bakelite AK grips to the type 81 and claven2 has a thread in this forum that has contents where a guy was able to fit ak furniture to his type 81 with considerable modding.

Sorry, I'm missing your point. The Type 81 has a number of similarities with the AK platform. Hell, a Valmet IS an AK variant and it's NR.

Anyway, moving on. I'll have to look for claven2's thread. Thanks for the tip!

My point was, the type 81 shares NO parts with AK pattern rifles. It also shares very few design characteristics... it has a rotating bolt like an AK,
A push button dust cover like an AK and captured action spring like an AK, but that's where it stops.

Cosmetically sure, it does look similar to an AK.

I only point this sort of thing out because going around saying the "the type 81 is basically an AK" or " the type 81 is very similar to an AK" is FAR from the truth. And all people are doing by saying those things is constantly provoking the RCMP to review and revoke it's already just NR status.

The select few Valmet rifles are only exempt from prohibition because a lot of them were given to indigenous people up north by the government as very robust self defense/hunting rifles. Or so the legend says haha

Best of luck with ur mods!

There's a better way to get a bakelite AK grip to fit that what's on YouTube.

Take the original grip off and grind the heads of the rivets on the grip plate until they are gone, then punch them out and slide the grip plate out from under the trigger guard. Use a small machine screw and nut to fasten the trigger guard back.

You will need a new grip screw, get yourself an M6 x 110 mm socket head cap screw. The diameter of the head doesn't fit in the AK grip so take it to a bench grinder and turn it down until it fits nice. The screw will also stick out of the grip a bit so grind it down a bit until it's as flush as you can get it while still getting a good bite with an Allen wrench.

This way is faster, cleaner and more importantly, you can return the rifle back to its original state.

Here's a pic of the grip plate removed and the new bolt:

My only concern with that method is whether or not in time the grip will twist and move due to lack of a grip plate. Guess eventually you'll find out if it truly is a concern or not.

AK's don't have grip plates. I did my VZ this way years ago and with 3 crates of ammo through it, it's never needed to be tightend.

Actually we are working on a modernization kit for the Type 81. We are still in the development process but I can show you guys our initial 3d rendering of the parts. If you guys are interested please let us know, it would help us immensely to have some proof of interest. IMG_5861.jpgIMG_5862.jpgIMG-5860.jpg

Looks very tactical. I could see people buying certain components from it. Like the the buttstock or just the fore end. But I bet the whole works would bump the type 81 close to M10x prices.

interested but too ambitious..... the T81 stocks arent removable and instead of a HG rail that looks like and longer than polytechs how about a shorter one?

i agree, they should build one component at a time, a kit would be too ambitious.

How just about basic T81 black or other coloured OEM furniture??

Like if I want a spare handguard lower and upper od green to replace my wood one I'd be happy

The Valmet and Type 81’s are totally different as the foremost rifle is a long barrelled NR AK variant of a larger caliber (223 and the vary rare 7.62x39’s are available)which by all accounts by the experts is far superior then the AK. Secondly they where deemed NR because of one groups political pressure which nobody wanted to challenge.

That photo is amazing!

The folding stocks can actually easily be taken off and this stock would use that folding stock attachment point. But we would definitely look into making a shorter rail, the only issue is due to the 18" barrels, its hard to make a handguard that looks good with such a length of barrel sitting out in front.

Would you be looking for a handguard similar to the polymer handguards used on the AK 74s of the Russian army?

We love your feedback and we would be more than willing to sell each item individually the only exception would be the lower handguard and dust cover, as to maintain a stable platform to mount optics the dust cover would need to mount similarly to the way the Zentico dust cover mounts with the Zenitco lower handguard.

We're loving the feedback guys. We are just trying to make the best product to really bring the type 81 into a league of its own, and to scratch the alpha AK itch some of us have at our office.
