Does any fancy Gun oil really help prevent rust?

I live in beautiful salty and wet Newfoundland. It is a constant battle to keep my guns free of rust. I use CLP, G96, Lubriplate grease and have a can of Rem Oil. All of these products claim to have a magic ingredient that prevents rust.
Does anyone know if any of these claims are really true?

Does any one product stand out in particular compared to plain old gun oil?

From now on I am going to buy stainless steel / nickel plated guns!
 
Dunno about gun oil but iv seen some torture tests with rustcheck, krown and wurth undercoat. All of these are light oils
Krown and wurth will actally defy gravity and travel up a panel

Last two can be harder to find but if rust protection is the game then its worth it. Actally, wurth it. That stuff takes the cake, no idea where to find it on the rock.
 
I have a rather large arsenal of oils, I really like rem oil, little pricey but my local walmart has it and its a 2 minute walk from my house.. I've found that hoppes works well but not being an aerosol kinda makes bore coating more difficult
 
The RCMP hired a study of oils and if you search you will probably find it, we did pay for it. It was for wear resistance and preservation. The winners were Eezox and G96 in that order. Eezox is sold only by Plenty O Patches I believe in Canada. G96 you can buy anywhere.
 
Yes RedShooter, I have dessicant packs and a heating rod in my safe. I recharge the packs every month.
I also have all my guns coated with a thin layer of CLP.

Like you Skip 1600, I have so many oil products on my shelf that I am looking more like an exotic oil collector than a firearm collector!!
 
I used Hoppes and G96 for years and 2 years ago I changed to Ballistol because of the improved cleaning and protection capabilities. I used to clean the barrell with Hoppes or G96 untill the patch ran clear and then ran a clean patch through with Ballistol --- I was amased at how much fowling there still was in the barrell.
 
I use an automotive product called CRC Power Lube as I shoot BP as well. BP is corrosive as well as the water/soap used to clean the firearms will induce corrosion and the Power Lube works excellent against this. You see alot of it on the line at BPCR shoots.
 
I use Krown T-40 on my waterfowl guns. The water beads off the surface. No rust either. Great stuff. Comes in an aerosol can and only costs $10 or so. They use it to prevent rust on vehicles.

I bought my Stevens used from someone and it was his truck gun. DIdnt get a real good chance to look it over when I bought it, but when I go home I looked at her good and found a few small rust spots. The first thing I did was put a thick coat of CLP on it. The stuff with teflon. Let it sit for a couple days and had no problem getting the surface rust off. Worked really good infact.

I just finished throwing a coat of CLP on because I happened to slip on some ice and slide down a hill into a big snowbank. My rifle was covered in snow. Got it home, cleaned it up and I wont have any rust from it. I think its great stuff.
 
G96 for all my rust protection and lube for moving parts for 20 years. Cleaners are a separate department for me for the barrel rifling. I use G96 and fine steel wool to remove rust spots works excellent.
 
Surprised no one mentioned Automatic Transmission Fluid. After reading a lot on this subject from various sites, I use Ballistol and ATF for short to medium time usage. For long term storage I also wax exterior of some pieces with Rene.
 
I don't know about all the high-tech stuff, but back when I used to hunt an old-time duck hunter told me to use paste wax on everything steel. I used the stuff you would get for a floor, but I imagine an automotive wax would work even better. I couldn't believe how well it worked. Moisture just beaded and rolled off.

Paste wax! Never heard of that idea but makes sense. I think the wax would cling to the metal much more effectively than an oil coating.

I should "Invent" a high tech Gun Wax, maybe make a few million dollars!
