Does anyone else think Garands kick ass?

I get a kick outta the Norinco M14 guys spending an arm and a leg upgrading to USGI parts, when for half the money, you get a complete actual USGI rifle that is the only semi allowed in Canada with more than 5rds.

That didn't really dawn upon me until you mentioned it. I've got two M14's and love them, I've shot a few of their older brothers and feel the same way. Just something about the old war horses that makes you smile when you shoot them. A Garand is definately in my future.

Garands kick ass...

I've had a couple Garands... a Winchester mfg and a Springfield mfg... bought back when a decent USGI went for around $400 cash. Wish I'd kept both. Would like to get one again... I agree Garands kick ass. [And been kicking ass since WWII]

I've enjoyed firing most of the different types of WWII and post WWII full-powered military semi-auto battle rifles. While I like the history of the Garand, I have to admit I prefer the convenience of the designs that come with the regular box mag. There were so many different designs that came out in the 40's and 50's and all obsolete by 1960.

My first Garand Shoot

I just got my FIRST Springfield made Garand (not the last) last week and I took it out to the range to have our local Garand expert look at it during a "historic" rifle competition. After checking it out he said that the 60's barrel was definitly shot out and that it couldn't be accurate past 12yrds, otherwise in top condition. Well, he shot 98 with his top condition M1; and I shot 70 out of 155'ish!!!! It just keeps shooting, and shooting, and shooting lol! We were both very surprised. I went home to find out how much it is to get it into top condition; and after speaking with Springfield Armories, the $300US is definitly worth it! My next rifle is to get my M1 rebarreled and parkerized by Springfield. I told the guys on my ship this and they can't wait till it comes to sea so that we can all share in the fun of shooting an M1; hell even the wife jokingly said, "this is my rifle, this is my gun!"lol

You sound like you are unsure.:D :D Why doubt your M1, when you have already said its good credentials?
Yes, they kick ass!!!! That was my favorite rifle during my younger days at the Reserve Corps.:)

Well if I sound uncertain to you I suppose I'd better get out real soon and shoot it again in order to absolutely remove all doubt. It's a good thing I bought a case of 30 '06 ammo the other day! :dancingbanana:

And I did see a Garand chambered in .308 in the EE recently. I have to wonder what that would be like to shoot ..... ;)

What kind of permits do you need to send yer M1 down for a refit at SA?
You need a permit to import a barrel, just wondering if it's cost effective to just get the work done at the source...

AFAIK, you can't send ex-us issued firearms back to the US.....law on their end of things.
I sure as #### wouldn't send my gun to SA for any work....their commercial M1's are a joke and they would likely steal all your parts and replace them with worn out, freshly parked crap that they make their guns out of......:)

They are about a dozen times removed from the SA that build pre and post war M1's for the gov.

Yeah, cram SA, there's other places I was thinking of sending it. I know you can't export US issue stuff, I wonder if that's the same for getting work done. Maybe a note from your parents saying you promise to get it back or something.

Yeah, of course Garands rock. They're only the best infantry personal weapon of WWII and the Korea war (and no apologies to all the Enfield fans  And yes, I also own a number of Enfields)

Have to disagree. Given the choice, I'd WAY rather go to battle with an STG44 than an M1 ;)

My GARAND kicks me in the shoulder, if yours kicks ass you are probably holding it wrong. Couldn't resist that ,but yes M1's are great. Mine is one of the Danish ones from Levers many years ago for $99. It took a long time to remove all the cosmoline .

Best American rifle for sure.
In addition to the STG44 and the FG42, I'd say the MAS44, the FN49 and perhaps the AG42b were better rifles than the M1 Garand.

Perhaps I should make some space for all the hate mail I will now recieve. :)

Even the Swedes thought the AG42 was a piece of ####.....they sold them off before the M96's:)

Well, I don't know the circumstances around that, but the Canadians scrapped the FNC1A1 before they retired the No4 Enfield, and I believe that Yugo's retired the SKS before they retired the M48b Mauser. That doesn't mean that the FN or the SKS are s**t. They just kept the bolt actions to issue to people whom they didn't trust with Semi's.

The AG42B is in the excellent 6.5x55 caliber, has a muzzle brake and uses the direct impingement gas system - all conducive to a higher level of accuracy. It also has a larger magazine that doesn't rely on en-block clips.

It's also far too complicated for the average grunt to operate under stress. Extraction is also rather violent leading to torn rims and jams. Any benefit the direct gas impingement has on accuracy is negated by the rear locking bolt.:p And the sights suck compared to the M1.....
There was a discussion on here about milsurp KB's and the AG42 walked away the winner:)
I had one for a while.......I wasn't impressed with it's accuracy or handaling. It was sold pretty quickly. But hey, it's cool, you can buy up all the crap rifles....leaves more of the solid performers for me:)

Canada scrapped the C1A1s before they retired the No. 4 Enfield. Really? The only residual use of the No. 4 is by the Cdn. Rangers. The C1A1s went when the C7 rifles became standard issue.
The FG42 series was hardly trouble free, and was neither fish nor fowl. The AG42B has serious problems. The STG is not the same class of firearm as the M-1. The MAS44 is a footnote in history. The FN49 is a fine rifle that saw limited use.
