Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

Another thing the west does better than the east, shoot! ;)

Out in the prairies you can spot a critter, finish your Bohemian , then take the shot. :)

Another thing you hardly see is a prairie boy bragging about how far they shoot!

My last deer was no more than 8 yards away and my bear this spring was 22 yards away. I hunt with an iron sight .270 so I like to creep up close to them before I take the shot. Or in the deer's case it just kept walking close and closer to me. It had no idea I was there.

You sure you’re not from southern sask? Haha

I have set up two sweet long range rifles one for deer/coyote and one for deer/moose. Spent alot of money and alot of time loading and getting it all perfect.
Last two coyotes i shot where at 10 and 27yds
And my deer was at 100yd.
It was cool to think i was going to be a super badass longrang hunter but the reality is i shot what ever gives me the chance.

The longest shot on game in my foolish youth was 600 yards on a cow moose with a 130gr handload from a Win 70 topped with a 4X Leupold.Hold over a door high off the bipod prone. One in the heart and the second a cigarette pk higher in the lungs.Across the valley you could hear the bullets hit.The cow walked off and disappeared into the treeline.I went down to the river in knee deep snow and stripped ,crossed and redressed.Stevie Wonder could have tracked her as she made it 30 yards and laid down, not dead but too sick to get up another between the lookers settled that.Carried moose meat till 2am puking all the way.A running cow elk at 500 yards and a previously wounded deer at about the same /not my animal.Anything closer is getting a truck ride.Nowadays poorer eyes, bigger scopes try to limit it to between the muzzle and 400yards.

I like the idea of long range hunting, but after trying some long range shooting, I find the concept of dialing a scope during a hunt to be a pain in the ass. This is probably compounded by the fact that where I live, the only rifle hunting we do is coyotes. I have not found many coyotes that hang around for proper range estimation and dialing. I prefer to shoot as far as I can hold over, or stay within MPBR. I took a coyote at 487 yards. I know it is that distance because I exif app to get the coordinates off the picture I took with my iPhone when I walked out to retrieve it. Google map measured the distance to the tree I was at for the shot.

Reading the other posts on this board - I have to Ask - Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?
“Anymore” would suggest common past practice.
After 30 years I still haven’t seen an animal harvested at that range.
However, if/when I see one at that range I am hunting it until I get (hopefully) close enough to kill it, I think it’s called stalking although that’s not how I would describe my efforts, lol

I know a few people who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn door at any distance. They don't practice, are too cheap to shoot before the season and I believe in some cases are afraid of the cannons they shoot. Lots of stories of wounded game. Makes me ill. Some, not all of the long range shooters practice a lot and I would have more confidence in them than some I know that can't hit a cardboard box at 100 yards.

No actually if I see a deer under 600 yards I won’t shoot it, I only shoot over 700 yards. 4 point buck at 100 yards isn’t a hunt, almost unethical shooting something that close!

Great thread by the way!

I try to keep my shots under 600 yds or meters when using my 303 Enfield Jungle Carbine (sniper version).

That being said if the deer is under 500 yds or meters, I'll stalk backwards - that is I'll sneak away from him until I get to a more challenging range.:rolleyes:

I hear ya, and kinda do the same except if its not 600+ I remove the cartridge from the chamber then aim and yell BANG. I then rechamber the round and when it hits the 600 yard mark I take 'em! :)

I've yet to drop one at 300 +.
Longest show was my 4x4 last year and that was 225. Year before that it was 20 yards. Not much opportunity for long shots where I hunt.

600 yards?

Given that most guys think 5 inches is 9 inches, I wonder what they think 600 yards is? Probably around 200 meters...

My deer have been taken at 50 yards or less, except one at 125 yards. My deer country does not have long sight lines.

Moose have been taken at 5 yards to 100 yards. Same thing, usually can't see very far, awyway.

The one exception is when my buddy and I stepped into a clear cut and saw a moose transiting the cut 425 yards away. (later measured the distance)

I had no idea of the actual distance, except I knew it was a long way off. Looked like a dog with antlers..

We both fired 4 shots. I was using a 358 with a scope. He had a M88 in 308 with irons.

My shots probably hit the ground 100 yards in front of the moose.

Buddy got 2 lung shots.

The 180 gr soft point had ZERO expansion. The bullet could have be re-loaded.

None of my stands in the woods are long shots. I'd say under 100 yards. I spend a lot of time clearing brush and opening my spots up so I can see them coming. Only 1 stand is over a small field and the longest shot is again under 200 yards.

I like it up close and personal when I'm hunting it gives the critters more of a chance.
