Does the 7mm08 deserve its reputation as a "girl's" gun

Maybe it's just my circle of shooters, but among those I talk to, when the 708 is brought up its invariably dismissed as a good round for the wife or girl friend.

Now, is there a reason for this opinion or is it misplaced machismo?

And naturally there is a 708 in my house . . . My wife's.

No girls in my house, and there is a 7-08 in my collection.... I have a .243 as well..... It is mild in the recoil department for sure and would make a great rifle for small framed female shooter.... But there is no such thing as a "girl's caliber" IMOP

My buddy, dropping a huge Roosevelt Elk with a 7-08

If, by girls gun, you mean, light recoil, accurate, deadly, kills very well....Then I guess it's a girls gun. :)

I have a 7mm08 sheep rifle. Nothing girly about a short action cartridge with good bullet selection and adequate energy for NA big game at any normal hunting range.

It is recommended to a lot of new, small, or female shooters because of the fairly light recoil. If someone's too manly for the 7-08 there are plenty of magnums out there to make them feel macho.

I think women and new shooters have an ignorance and fear of recoil. The 7/08 is light on recoil in a standard weight rifle. I coach women at a woman's outdoor workshop mind you I teach skeet but the first question asked is "Does it Kick" once they get over that first fear they're usually fine. With proper gun fit and techniques women even small framed ones can learn to shoot the big magnums. I'm 5'9.5" 153 lbs and shoot a 458 wm. Not because I'm over compensating but because I love the rifle and caliber. I also love my 25/06 but it's ugly. To label a caliber as a girls caliber I think is wrong. On the other hand savage made a girls gun. I almost bought one the wood was actually really nice but it fit horrible

The 7-08 is essentially a ballistic twin of the 7X57. A 140 at 2900 has had a long and distinguished history killing medium sized big game, so the name on the cartridge head doesn't make much difference.

So True!!

I have shot [with the 7x57] Elk, Moose, WT Deer, Mule Deer, Blacktail Deer, Black Bear, Bighorn sheep, and several coyotes and wolves.
The 7-08 is no less capable, so I would have no qualms about taking it hunting almost anything in North America.

That's why every box of ammo comes with a box of tampons.

1. It's your circle of ignorant shooters.

2. Complete lack of experience comes to mind.

3. Smart woman.

Excellent all - around hunting round. It gets a bad rap from the mild recoil impulse (from the manly men) I think it is a true golden age of guns, when we see rounds developed that re less intimidating for women to shoot.

not everywhere, I would check the availability at the local store before thinking of it...

I am referring to projectiles, 7mm is at every store that sells them and there is a wide variety. If not handloading then .243win would be a better choice in this range.

It is. The 7x57 was designed along with the Mauser rifle to used by manly men doing manly things. The 7-08 was designed to be used by girls and girly men to save a couple of ounces.
