Dog breeds

I hunt with a flat coated retriever and a yellow lab on my own land. Both are exceptional grouse dogs, they sniff them out and tree them, I only have to pop them in the head with the 22. It almost doesn't seem fair for the bird. Hahaha

I'm sold on German Short hair Pointers. Smart loyal affectionate. Hyper if they are bored. Brain workout is more important than physical workout

I have had Labs for most of my life other than a Border Collie x Red Heeler that was the best damn cattle dog that ever lived...imho of course. Not sure if they simply fit my life and personality, or if a lifetime of being with Labs has molded me to fit them. The last Yellow Lab that I had stole hearts everywhere we went and I constantly had to fend off half-hearted threats to steal her.

HOWEVER...our daughter and son in laws Chocolate Lab and our neighbours Yellow Lab would not take much persuasion for me to put them on the business end of a rifle. They have got to be the stupidest, hardest headed, totally squirrelly damn canines I have ever met in my life. Both of these dogs are expensive registered dogs. Not one of my dogs has ever been papered. But each one I went and saw the breeders in person and met at least one of the parent dogs if not both.

I am told by people that supposedly know more than I do about Labs that the Yellow Lab that I had was from English bloodlines as opposed to North American bloodlines. I have no idea of the validity of that statement. I think the story behind all this is use great care choosing the dog whichever breed you choose. And papers don't necessarily make the dog, although papers should promise greater predictability.

small munsterlander gets my vote. I have a friend that breeds them and I have gotten to see them in action. Fantastic at flushing birds and rabbits and so hearty. I believe a good dog is only as good as the training. I have been fortunate to watch him do some training and it just amazes me. Greats dogs, quiet and very good pets.

I used to have have a pure bred german shepherd. Never took him hunting, but if you are looking for an intelligent, active, and loyal companion then german shepherds are the breed to go!!

I have a golden doodle that you think would be a great hunting dog coming from poodles which were originally bred for hunting believe it or not and golden retrievers, but she's a mess. She loves being outside and will run non stop for hours sniffing and exploring everything. but she has the attention span of a 4 year old at an amusement park. She's terrified of guns for no reason that I can figure out and cowers as soon as she see's one,(she's never been around one being fired). She'll chase rabbits and birds and squirrels with reckless abandon but only if you actually show her the animal cause she won't find it herself. Absolutely an idiot. but she's loyal, affectionate, good with the kids, well behaved and very obedient. She's a goof, but she's my goof and I like her a lot.

.... Not Hunting dogs, but my Family and I have a German Shepherd (Male ) who's absolutely devoted to his Family/Pack and his "Squeaky Toys" , and is very protective. The other dog is a Miniature Australian Shepherd (Female), who's really "The Energizer Bunny" in a clever disguise. Both are excellent companions and love to ride in the car with a Family Member! Both are really good with my Wifes' cats, although they do have their favorite cats, that they allow to feed with them from their respective bowls! ! .... My last Dog was a full sized "Aussie" and it took me a long to to muster up the will, or is it courage to get another dog ? 'Still miss him ! ....... In all fairness, and I've had a number of them over the years, a German Shepherd is NOT for everyone, and particularly one from working lines ! They can be a handful, and if uncontrolled/supervised, can do a lot of damage if they think they're defending their "Pack", "Alpha" or property ! ........ David K
