A good vibrate/shock collar works great for training. Using Positive reinforcement and consistency I have great dogs because of this. Dogs do not come trained, you need to help them reach their full Potential. Cant afford a good e collar? At the least get a Halty collar that goes over their snout.

Prong collars are horrible and a white trash way to deal with being lazy. Put time into your dogs or don't have them.( General statement )

a shock collar hurts me a hell of a lot more than the prongs when tested on myself

I have used a body harness with a chest attachment point with great success for all but the largest dog (best on small to medium dogs with lots of short burst energy): when the dog attempts to pull it turns the dog towards the person on the end of the leash. The dog soon learns that any attempt to pull hard will cause them to have their attention turned away from the object of their desire (other person, squirrel, etc). For one rather large pitbull I also added a "bridle" style device to pull their head to me as well: it had the dog trained within days and was soon unneeded.

I am not against shock, buzz and/or pinch collars but I find them better for the dog that the harness does not work on.

I have successfully used the harness on all sorts of Springers and other hunting dogs as well as a couple of rather large pitbulls with proper attention and focus.

Only one very stubborn Rottie required a pinch collar and that was only around other dogs getting more attention than him: it was specifically an "attention jealousy" issue when he would push other dogs out of the way. No dog or person was ever attacked by him, but I had some concern about him doing "unintentional" injury to a smaller person or child.

Many methods work well if you have care and focus... while those same methods can become abuse if used wrong: it's up to you.

My dog has a high prey drive and suffers from fear aggression, a pronged collar is invaluable tool. A flat collar does nothing but choke him.
