Down to 2 choices a .223 Savage or Mossberg

+1 for the Savage.

NAA.

Ive owned both. The mvp shoots well, the bolt is horrible and the mag thing is a fad. Magwell is sloppy too. Savage (axis) shoots equaly as well better bolt better trigger. Sold the mvp still have the savage ;)

You are down to the wrong two ... in that bracket the Ruger Anerican is a better choice... better yet spend a little more for a Weatherby S2...

I have a Savage 12FV. My most accurate rifle.

This is a pretty sweet deal though!

I have MVP in 223/5.56 and use the same Mags on my Norinco T97nsr :0 lots of fun and great accuracy from MVP even with Norinco cheap bullets I also like the Weatherby S2

Well went and handled a Mossberg MPV Patrol .223 (569.00) , a Mossberg MPV Varmint laminate with scope and bipod (689.00), and a Savage.AXIS 2 c/w scope (377.00) tonight.

And while I like the Mossbergs looked cool the sloppy bolt and stock just made me question them. The sales rep then asked if I knew of the flex I said yes love the design he said really? He then brought a gun with this stock and said look at the pot metal and plastic, then he said now wiggle it....

Then he says forget the gimmicks and have a look at the Savages. I then tried the bolt gritty but not sloppy, then the Accutrigger oh wow for a sub 400.00 scoped rifle I went okay I see what you mean.

He said Savage is not about quality but will keep up with the Remingtons and Tikkas so I am going to pick up the Savage. The stock is so so but hey I will upgrade it later if needed?

So thanks everyone Savage it is.

Randy

I have the MVP Laminate Target style stock and MAN IS IT A TACK DRIVER. I have sub moa groupings with factory ammo. It has a trigger that is clean and crisp which feels the exact same as my accutrigger on my savage 22. I grabbed the MVP when it first came out and the price has gone up 200 since then and I think it will continue to rise. I cant speak to the Patrol version but i am very very happy with mine.

oh and BTW can you say LAR Mags??? nothing but good times

I can also say .50 Beowulf mags. Lol.

what store were you looking at these rifles? I've been trying to put my hands on an MVP for a while.

A friend of mine has an Axis and just received an MVP. The Savage shoots great, but the firing pin spring doesn't have enough energy to fire some military ammo.
The spring is short and about 1 in 10 wouldn't fire.
I am going with him to compare his MVP and the Savage.

My default response when someone asks what they should buy for their first hunting rifle is "get a Savage package gun in .308 then bring it to me before you shoot it". Then all I do is strip it, clean and lightly lube, remount the bases with thread sealer and mount/lap the rings, then drop the scope back in and realign it as well. Then its time to shoot, and they are generally 1.5 MOA out of the box with typical ammo (rem fed win hunting ammo). Even torque, consistent shooting, a safe design, and a bit of instruction up front gives me and them some piece of mind.

I don't even own one anymore but they are still fine rifles for what they are. I can't imagine myself recommending a Mossberg centerfire over Savage.

OP, good call on the savage, hard to beat them all things equal, and nothing touches them at that price point
