down to two, which one?

You have obviously not handled the Marlin. The recoil pad is very nice. ;)

I have never handled one, but the photos of them.......aka first impressions
just don't do it for me.
Have handled, own the Stevens 200.
My daughter shoots this thing better than anything
higher end I own.
Good for three rounds on a cloverleaf. No chit........
If I had to do it all over again for her grad present,
Trade X of some sort of old 98 or Huskey 1600's.
What I have into her Stevens 200 would set me up there.
But then again, she has an original and she shoots the galldang
thing better than me..............and her first fur last season. :D
Her boyfriend bought the Savage 111 and it is just as impressive
for the $$ spent. Toss the combo package scope, tiddle with the
trigger and for around five brown ones your happening.
Then again, I like old chit.....:p

Marlin is the better gun for sure.... the mossberg offers a lot of fancy crap that can't do a 4 inch group at 200....

I've got a 4X4 in 300WM, and it easily does MOA. I've had it down to.5 MOA consistently with handloads. It's a cheap gun, but shoots great. Mine doesn't have the LBA trigger on it, so I will upgrade at some point.

Stevens. Savage has been making that design for ever and ever and ever, and has a lot of time to make refinements to the action over the years. Plus, such a large number of these actions means that there's a huge aftermarket out there, should you wish. For me, it all comes down to the fact that the Stevens is a more established, mature product.

The XL7 - I'm sure it's a good gun, but it doesn't have the track record that the stevens (and savages in general) do. It just hasn't had the time to become established, and refined as the Savage. And since Marlin was bought out by Remington, I'm unsure as to the quality of their QA; I've seen what's happened to the famous 700 series over the past decade or so, and it's to the point where a brand new Remington isn't even on my list of new guns I'd even consider buying.

Unless you're feeling adventurous, and want to try something a little of the beaten path, that is, and then deal with any upsides and downsides you encounter. If I were doing that, I'd try a Savage Axis - after handling one at the store, I'm quite impressed.

I have an XS-7 Marlin in 243, and while I am a Remington 700 fan for the most part, this Marlin has impressed me.
Decent trigger, shoots under moa with most loads, and handles well.
Buy the Marlin, it is good value for the money.
Eagleye.

I read this thread and just wonder with Remington taking over Marlin if the quality will be just as good as the pre-marlins. For this reason I pick a stevens. Once remington gets their hands on something it is all down hill from there. Remember this is Remington country. Always looks at the maker, just look what remington did to the marlin 30-30.

I bought a Stevens 200 in .308 last year. Good rifle, I can get just over 1 inch groups at 100 yrds with factory sometimes. Probably do better with more practice and reloads.

However after handling the Marlin X7 and the Mossberg 4x4 I wish I would have waited and done a bit more looking. The trigger and stock on the X7 feel (to me) to be much better quality. And I liked the stock, trigger and removeable magazine on the 4x4.

The stevens shoots well but to me the stock just looks and feels like crap. Iam not selling mine, but my next rifle in 25-06 will be an x7 or 4x4.

Just my $.02

That's a good question...but from what i can tell the shelves are still full of Marlin produced ones so far.

Took my Marlin XL7 in 25-06 to the range today and must say that I am impressed with it, so far. Had some problems with Hornady 117gr factory ammo (3FTF's. Primers are seated 6-8thou deeper than normal ammo? Plus a 10" 5-shot group?!?!?), but my first reloads with 117gr Gamekings put 5 into about 1 1/2" at 100yrds. Nothing to be overly excited about, but shows that the rifle has some potential.

Well so that's a good question to ask everyone.

Who here has recently purchased a Marlin bolt action ?? and does it have JM stamped on the barrel (usually left side near the action) or Rem stamped on it???

And if you have a REM one, how does it shoot, and hows the quality of the parts, fit and finish???
