I'm thinking of starting to reload for my .223 in the near future. What I'm really wondering is, can a guy safely download the .223 to get something equivalent to the Hornet?? And would the light v-max bullets have okay accuracy through a Stevens 200??

I have a couple of reasons for this. First, just cause I can, and second, I think it would really encourage the better half. She loves shooting rimfire, but I think shes more noise sensitive than anything.(she doubles on the ears and still...)

I figure having more range than the rimfire with out the crack of the .223 might walk her up the scale. Any thoughts appreciated.:)

i loaded up some .222 Rem. with cast bullets and 12grs. of 4759, 55gr. sp gc, at 2100fps, no recoil, low noise, and just as accurate at 100 yds. as factory j-word bullets. Now I'm on a long mission to get them to shoot as well as my handloads using H-322 and Nozzler 50 grainers. 12 grs. of 4759 would drum up 1800fps. in the .223, and is the std. powder for light loads.

I played around with handgun powder in the 223... from the Hogdgon data center

Here is the data from there site...
55 GR. HDY FMJ Hodgdon Titegroup .224" 2.200" 3.1GRS
1064 FPS 4,000 CUP
55 GR. HDY FMJ Hodgdon Clays .224" 2.200" 3.2GRS
1060 FPS 3,700 CUP

Many of my older reloading manuals provide reduced velocity loads useing IMR 4198 powder for numerous calibers...have found accuracy at various speeds in the .223 rem. also with this powder.

Starting at what I considered a Max load of 21.0 gr. IMR4198 at 3120 fps using a Remington 55 grain fmj...I worked backwards to get accurate reduced loads.

Win. model 70 .223 remington ...24 inch brl. 16 X Scope

All loads tested.. 3 shots at 75 yards only ..for the first round of experimenting.

Remington 55 gr. spz fmj

21.0 Grains Imr 4198...3120 fps average.......0.56 inch ...75 yards
20.0 Grains.......3080 fps...0.64 inch
19.0 Grains.......2910 fps...1.90 inch
18.0 Grains.......2750 fps...1.04 inch
17.0 Grains.......2670 fps...0.70 inch
16.0 Grains.......2510 fps...0.77 inch
15.0 Grains.......2402 fps...1.70 inch
14.0 Grains.......2311 fps...1.50 inch
13.0 Grains.......2180 fps...0.37 inch
12.0 Grains.......2040 fps...1.17 inch
11.0 Grains.......1880 fps...0.78 inch
10.0 grains.......1722 fps...1.47 inch

I had excellent results with the .222 rem also..plus a lot of .30 calibers too... and at the other end ..my .416 Rem. Mag shoots its best (cast) 365 grain loads useing Imr4198 at 1800 fps avg.

I used bluedot, 40 gr hollowpoint to 3000 fps. Powder charge was 12 grains. I backed right down to 5 grains for 1450 fps............

223 with Blue Dot

There is a wack of info on Accurate Reloading, com for using bluedot powder in rifle cartridges, esp in 223. Good accuracy, quiet report and still kill very well, not to mention extended barrel life. FS
