I agree that frosting is a form of pitting however I argue that defining it as a frosty appearance is to say that the bore has very very light pitting. When a bore is pitted it means to me 'heavy' or 'deep pitting'.

All of these subjective opinions underlies the need to have a more common understanding of definitions in my opinion.

I don't really care what it is so long as:
1. everyone supports the idea and;
2. it is easy to interpret / difficult to miss-interpret.

I would like pictures as a reference

Because I really don't know what all these terms refer to or what they look like. If we had pics in a sticky then we would have a a standard frame of reference. We could say it is worse than pic4 but not as bad as pic 5. I think this is a worthwhile topic and a good endeavor. If I can help let me know. how about a tutorial on shooting bore pics?
 
Riflechair, I think the idea is worth pursuing, and as others have said, pictures would be essential.
I believe most CGN sellers would use such a system if it were simple and clear, and stickied in the EE's.

Agreed. If you can cram a thousand words into one single pic, ask for many decent pics.

Those who "...don't know how to..." or simply do not post any quality pics of bore/barrel and just litter the ad with angle/close ups of the rifle in general could very well be hiding something.

I'm currently a week into cleaning up a couple of M39 barrels that still consistently spit out black patches after brushing/soaking...
 
FWIW, I WILL point out that taking decent bore shots is NOT easy. Not every seller will even have a camera capable of doing so. I would venture that for most sellers, a proper bore shot will be beyond both their photographic skills AND the capability of the camera they own.
 
NOT a waste of time. Even ifwe don't find the Holy Grail of simple terms to relay complex concepts, and it's sure looking like there's a lot involved in communicating barrel condition over the internet without pictures...

...then at least we're figuring out all the little details that we would care to know.

Re:frosting vs pitting; frosting would be very light pitting, that I would factor into the value of the gun...'in my books.'

And what about the Canadian Access to Firearms and the No Longer "Gunrunner" Paper. Good luck with photos of the bore in a Black and White Newspaper.

There are so many ads in CGN where there are no pics, or PM for pics, or have no pics, just a description. It's just like the Old Gunrunner!

If anything the problem is computer literacy, or will post pics later which never happens, not having a camera, or the time, but it still works fine!

If in doubt, use the Telephone and call the Seller!

Agreed. I tried for an hour last night to take a half decent photo and didn't end up with a single one that was usable. But even if the seller can't take a good photo, sample photos of each rating would be of great use.
 
This would be really helpful for guys like me who just dont know how to gauge the condition of the bore properly. Maybe some of the more knwoledgeable members could take the inititive to compile pictures of each condition. I too have tried to take bore pics but my camera just wouldnt cooperate.
 
Sorry about raising an old post here, but the idea of a bore rating guide is intriguing to me as I've had some disputes in the past over bore condition. At the very least it could give a seller an idea on what to look for in a bore so he can price his rifle accordingly. I think a lot of people selling rifles give the bore a quick glance, see some brightness and then call it excellent or very good, when really it's your average milsurp bore that's seen a lot of use. They then proudly list it in the upper selling range thinking they have a gem on their hands when the rifle really is just average.

Claven - how would you like to see the descriptions worded?
