After a year of patiently tracking down all of the components I've finally built my "Dream AR"!
The following images contain captions with complete details, technical specifications and a broken-down list of parts. The
'acid burn' effect bordering the images was just me messing around in Photoshop... Some portions of the photos may
appear slightly brighter than others due to the way the flash hit (but the gun is almost pitch black).

Heckler and Koch HK416D
As you can tell from the following photos, the satin finish and colour-filled markings on the POF lower are an almost
identical match to the HK 416 upper. The advantage of the POF is that it offers some ambidextrous features and has
a really awesome oversize trigger guard that has been integrated into the receiver. That and since you can't legally
own a 416D lower (full-auto), the 416D upper works with any standard AR lower (unlike the HK MR223).

Heckler and Koch 416 Upper
° HK416D gas-piston upper receiver, proprietary HK free-floating rail system
° 10.4" cold hammered-forged barrel (1:7 RH twist, 20,000-rnd service life) with Knight Triple Tap flash hider
° Magpul AFG (advanced forward grip), ladder protectors and LaRue Tactical LT-Fug (forward universal grip)
° Magpul MBUS, LaRue Tactical LT-660HK Aimpoint mount and Aimpoint T-1 red-dot optic
° HK full-auto bolt and carrier group and BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 charging handle (swapping for an ambi later)

hk416-01.jpg

POF-USA Lower
° POF 415-SA-GIII lower receiver (ambidextrous bolt and safety release), POF-USA lower parts kit
° HK spring and buffer, HK combat grip and Magpul UBR stock (with enhanced buttpad)
° HK cleaning/repair kit, HK combat sling and HK German 416/5.56x45mm Nato 30-rnd magazines
° Still trying to track down a beavertail version of the HK combat grip w/storage (variant 1)...

hk416-03.jpg

A close-up of the POF lower that highlights the flared magwell and integrated oversize trigger guard. I wasn't able to
install a Magpul BAD as the POF sports a larger ridge around the bolt release (will have to go third party).

hk416-04.jpg

The other side of the POF lower with ambidextrous bolt and safety (not yet installed).

hk416-05.jpg

A close-up of the HK bolt carrier group and LaRue quick-release mount.

hk416-06.jpg

The proprietary HK rail system; the whole fore-end comes off for easy maintenance and cleaning.
I managed to fit both a forward and vertical grip on the lower rail (may shorten the vertical grip yet).

hk416-07.jpg

The heavier Magpul UBR stock helps balance out the weight on the front-heavy HK receiver.

hk416-08.jpg

The LaRue HK-specific mount allows cowitness with the Magpul MBUS and Aimpoint T-1.

The Knights Armament Triple Tap flash hider, complete with upside down logo (a collector's item no doubt!)

Thanks (I had a lot of help through the EE tracking everything down). Once it warms up a bit more and I have a chance I will definitely do that. I just used the HK magazine in the photo for the sake of 'authenticity'. Since this is not an HK lower (which only takes EMags) I can use virtually anything.

Wow, Very nice! Be sure to give us a range report on how she shoots. One question, why did you go with a metal magazine, instead of the beloved PMAG?

Fug + afg == wtf ?

Can't fault you for your component selection obviously , but my WTF meter is pegged on the vertical / angled grip combo. Please explain the utility there.

I wanted the best of both worlds? Basically I was going with a forward vertical grip anyway (LaRue), but I just wasn't happy with the feel/grip from the XTM panels I had on the lower rail when grasping it there - so I figured I'd mount the AFG and see how that worked (turns out I had just enough space, too).

The AFG just feels more natural to grasp at an angle, and the advantages (as I see it, anyway) is that it's fairly easy to transition between the two - and the AFG also sports a muzzle guard. It basically comes down to ergonomics and this combo felt really comfortable to me.

Aren't the MBUS sights too tall for the Aimpoint on a short Larue HK mount?

Troy has some new short folding BUIS sights that could work.

Have you shot this setup yet?

Seems odd to choose the HK height Micro mount if you were using regular height BUIS?

I would ditch one of the forward grips...having two doesn`t make sense.

Looks very nice! I'm working on my own dream AR and I'm now even more committed to getting it built then ever before.

Persistance pays off! Good luck with your project!

No, as this is a mid-height LaRue mount.

Not yet - just received the lower on Monday and finished it that evening. I wanted cowitness with the irons and this setup allowed that. To each their own, I guess (I like the two grips)

Apart from the front grip setup....very nice.
Wouldn't it be more 'authentic' with a set of HK sights?

Sure, and an HK E1 stock would have made it more authentic as well. And while I like the HK diopter (or flip-up) BUIS and the HK stock, I prefer the Magpul UBR for weight (helps balance it a bit more) and the polymer flip-up MBUS.

I agree with Big Red. Your just adding more weight. I would probably also ditch the UBR due to the weight factor as well. When I had my 416, I tried all kinds of different stocks and ended up with the ole CTR on there simply due to the amount of weight.

You should also try and get proper BUIS or the high mount for that micro. Right from Larue's page:

Medium (LT660HK)
Provides lower 1/3 cowitness when used with HK416 weapons systems, or similar AR-15 piston upper assemblies.
This will NOT give you absolute co-witness with iron sights if used on a regular AR-15.

Other then that, very sweet rifle. I know how much you've probably sank into that thing.

I do realize it's not absolute co-witness, but it's very close. No argument that the UBR and grips add more weight to an already heavier system. If I was going strictly for the lowest weight I'd probably lose the MBUS, swap the UBR for a CTR and drop one or both grips which would remove up to 32oz (2oz x2, ~16oz, 5.5oz and ~6.5oz). Thanks for the suggestions!

Don't get me wrong, it is a sweet rifle  . I died a little inside when I sold mine :(
