Drinking coffee in the tree stand?

I drink tea in my blind regularly. I also pee in a jug but at the end of the day, I dump it right next to the blind. The buck I shot yesterday didn't seem to mind either of those things...and neither have the other bucks I've shot.

Movement on the other hand, they catch on to real quick. Anyone who says that deer never look up, have never hunted in a raised position and moved. I love this old quote from Fred bear: “The best camouflage pattern is called, “Sit down and be quiet!” Your grandpa hunted deer in a red plaid coat, think about that for a second.”

Apparently red plaid ain’t that bad for camo. Video explains deer vision, how movement works, the band of vision that deer have, and how they can see you in a tree at whatever distance, among other things like what colours they actually see and to what degree. I found it pretty interesting.

Maybe I’m wasting my time but I check wind once I’m settled in, as sometimes it isn’t obvious.

I used to buy some sort of windchecker — like Dead Down or the one from Primos — but two summers ago I got some milkweed pods, which are full of the wispy pappus that floats in the air to disperse the seeds. I keep it in a little plastic fliptop container and it makes a great wind indicator.

Morning thermals are almost always rising, so scent isn’t an issue. In any case, it’s movement and noise you want to control… there’s less chance of deer winding you the higher your stand is.

My thought: coffee or any liquid leads to urination and a human scent like that is most definitely a red flag. But as Somebody and Sask said, you have to play the wind direction anyway (it's always there even when you can't feel it- when I'm out stalking I dangle a length of very light thread) and no animal can smell from upwind. They can circle around, however, if they suspect something.
I drink coffee, I also piss directly out the side of my stand. It doesn’t make a difference.

...I'm just shy of my OAP, and I've done this as well...all my life. I've taken my share of deer without any issues. I smoked since I was a teen, until I quit 27 yrs ago...same -same...lotsa deer taken while the smoke was wafting around on the thermals. My choice of hides was usually a ground blind 95% of the time...made from surrounding dead wood, balsam fir trees and a few 2x4's & 2x2's.

They can smell your breath, BO, etc. Don't worry about coffee and darts. Guys focus too much on scent/odour. If they can smell you, they can smell you, coffee or not.

Biggest thing with drinking or smoking is moving. Just be mindful of that.

I don't put a lot of thought into scent control, because at the end of the day I'll never be able to mask the scent of my breath, and its the breath of a meat eater. And the farts. Those too.

Now, I do the obvious stuff like try to avoid spilling gasoline on myself when filling the truck, but food, drink, etc is not something I worry about.

Depends on the coffee. If it's a fine Columbian dark roast brewed with a stove top percolater, yes it's a problem. If it's Tim Hortons or Starbucks don't worry about it.:D

any of you guys "smoke up" before heading into the stand?
and I do not mean the wacky weed before anyone jumps on me LOL

I watched a video recently from a guy who does a lot of hunting.
He starts a very small fire and then once the flames are going he piles on green vegetation to create a thick smoke from the fire.
He then takes all his clothing , boots and gear and thoroughly exposes it to the thick smoke. This very effectively removes human and other scents from his person while he is hunting. He does it in the minutes before he dons his gear and heads into the woods.
I found it funny during the video that he kept say how "smoking up" before each hunt was one of the key tricks to his success.
Around here, smoking up has an entirely different meaning hehe

When I went on a deer hunt with hounds the guys on stand would all light a fire, poop and piss first and much to my surprise and disbelief they would shoot deer running right to them!!
…and rumour is that animals fart too. lol
