Drinking coffee in the tree stand?

My experience is they have no sense of smell. Seems to be all sight and sound that sets them off, and even then not if they’re facing head on.

You guys remember ol Fred Trost ?? From the PBS show...Michigan Outdoors ? His famous testing of human wizz in a 2 liter pop bottle vs Big Buck lure.
IIRC...The ammonia in the human urine drew in more deer.!! That ticked off the big companies, who had deeper pockets, more lawyers than trump, rudy and Ivana combined and poor old Fred lost his shirt in the ensuing court battles. I think all he had left was his unused bottle of wizz pee :) :)

they can smell alright.
I have watched deer pass by my stand to the downhill side that I enter the stand on and stop dead in thier tracks right where I walked. They get nervous and head back the other way. Sometimes it even gives me shot at an animal I couldn;t get an angle on when it initially passed thru the spot. When I hunted the same spot from the ground for years before I put the stand in, I have seen the deer come all morning while the thermals were down drafting. As soon as those thermals switch to uphill, the deer know I am there and I have seen them react as soon as they get to a point where the wind is carrying my scent. They stop, get nervous, does with raise thier tails and stomp or wheeze and they are gone. They didn't see me and they didn't hear me sitting motionless behind cover.... they smelled my scent on the wind.

What I meant to say was moreso that in my experience they haven’t reacted to sense of smell whatsoever, except when smelling pee. I have had them walk within a few feet of me when I was sleeping sitting on the ground against a tree. 2 of my friends have had a similar experience, and one was much closer.
Years ago I shot a doe from 274 yards away (rangefinder). It dropped instantly. There was a second doe facing me. It continued to graze while I walked all the way up to it within about a dozen feet. It only ran when it turned sideways, and at that 8nstant appeared visibly startled.
I also was standing still once in the open holding my rifle. A young calf walked by me about 40 feet away and didn’t notice me so long as I stood still like a statue. It only ran after I moved. I had no intention of shooting it but just wanted to watch it as it was too small.

None of this is a scientific test of deer sense of smell or sight, but it provides feedback on my deer hunting. In my experience they have responded strongly to sight and sound, but not to scent except when it drew them in. Including my pee spot.

If anyone worries about smell and cant sleep at night because of it…here is a trick I learned years ago.

About a month before the season, visit your shooting spot/s once a week and leave a used pice of your clothing every time…an old worn tshirt, a used sock or something.

That will get them used to your scent…if it worries you that much.

😀

Sight and sound in my experience is much, muuuch more important.

Guys often argue about whether smoking darks in the stand will affect your hunt. But what about a nice steaming cup of thick coffee? Not quite as powerful of a smell as cigarettes but still pretty powerful.

They never seemed to mind the smell of my woodstove - they'd be all over the yard all fall and winter long. They must have smelled the stove, the old food garbage, etc. Funny though, since we got another dog, never saw one in the yard again, not even at night when the dog's inside.

Deer know what predators smell like, and I doubt they smell like coffee. I'd say, don't worry about it. I think too much is made of "smell" - it's a gimmick to get us buying crap we don't need.

Whatever get you out and keeps you in your stand.... coffee, podcasts, reading a book, or scrolling cgn.

The important thing is to enjoy your time.

Sure some scents can spook deer. Or at least make them cautious.

But in my experience smells and sounds can also make them curious.

I have plenty of pictures of deer walking past my cameras while I'm nearby running chainsaw or my mini-ex, or while burning brush, heck I've got pictures of deer 200m from my range when I'm shooting.

I've enjoyed strong smelling drinks or food in my stand, and granted... no deer have walked up while I'm having a snack, I'm sure they have watched me from the brush.

I don’t drink coffee, but there is a smoking hot 25 year old redhead at my local coffee shop that I really need to get into my hunting blind, for the day, she smells like coffee.

The pheromones floating around your blind may or may not attract deer but you have a good shot for more reds/blondes/brunets bumping into your blind 😜

I knew a guy that barked out a deuce from his treestand and shot an 8 point buck 3 minutes later... :)
There is certainly some deftness required to do that sitting/standing up 8-12ft. Kinda makes you wonder if it’s even possible with the new tree harnesses out there now.. 🤣

This is probably the dumbest, most ill-informed post I have ever read... it has got to be a troll???

Deer are individuals. The smartest deer has it's dumb days. We have a couple of deer that show up around the house here that are adjusted to human scent. You can walk up on them in plain sight to within 20-30 yards. Other deer not so much.

I've said it before, The stupid deer, those you can shoot!

Want to get the smarter deer? You either need to hope they have an off or distracted day, or be prepared, and try your best to eliminate both noise, and scent.

Right now the bucks are quite dumb as most of the does have been bred and they are looking for a last shot at a hottie. 3 of us got our bucks yesterday. Couldn't buy a deer mid month.

Yes I do remember that episode on MO. Damn, I didn't know about Fred's troubles with the Corporate Creeps though.
Fookin' sad state of affairs.

I've tried some factory deer lures many yrs back and found them to be not all that effective in drawing in critters, but really effective at repelling
the missus when I got home. ;)
No worries fer me having coffee when hunting and for deer attractant, I used apple juice in a 1 liter pump spray bottle that worked just fine.
Wizzin' in the woods ain't a bother to critters in my experience and I most always buried me craps. Meat eater poo ain't a good deer lure.
