Sometimes I just bite them at the base of the skull (if there is nothing to whack their heads against).

Some ducks are "softer" than others, don't ask how I know.

I thought it wasnt ethical to shoot them while they were resting on water?

According to whose ethics? That's the point. Ethics are personal and not global. LEGAL should be the only thing outsiders are concerned about.
