Dumbest thing I've ever seen while hunting

Jr and I were out in the blind this afternoon waiting for a white tail to come strolling by when I spot movement through the poplars about 200 yards away in the back corner of the field I'm hunting. Something black and furry is creeping around. I look through the Binos and it is a person in a fur hat dressed in dark colours. He must of seen me in the blind and he quickly took off.

From what I gather it is the landowner of the adjacent quarter who is paranoid about people hunting on his land so every late afternoon he creeps around the perimeter of his land thinking he is going to catch trespassers.

To put this into perspective a lot of the land around his land is not posted and this is the middle of rifle season. I can understand him posting his land and running off trespassers but is he freaking CRAZY ! Maybe he should just put on a deer costume so he can blend in more. On a more positive note we spotted a nice buck on our drive out not too far from my blind. Maybe the buck will come visit us tomorrow and Mr Fur hat can watch us fill a tag.:)

What is the dumbest thing you guys have run into ?
 
20 years ago, a guy in the USA got shot because a hunter thought he was a squirrel... turns out he was a hobby taxidermist and had mounted a squirrel on his hat... he was picking mushrooms along a creek bank, bobbing up and down... the hunter was floating the creek in a canoe and fired a shot at the bouncing squirrel... and put a .22 LR right through the Squirrel man's temple. Now that's Stupid.
 
Quite a few years ago my father, brother, and I had met up in the middle of the day during whitetail season.
We were talking and then we all started hearing this whistling which was getting closer.
We were up on this long ridge and 2 does ran right by us. A few minutes later this guy comes out on the other end of the ridge running towards us and blowing this whistle.

If the whistling wasn't odd enough the thing that sticks out in my mind was he had a Marlin 336 slung over his shoulder.

The sling was a few strands of the yellow poly rope and the ends were taped to the barrel and buttstock with duct tape.

He stopped and asked if we had seen any deer? "Just a couple of does" my brother told him. Off he went blowing his whistle.
 
Wow... Can't compete... Dunbest thimg I have ever seen was when I was associated with a gang in winchester ontario back in my teens... I was on dogging duty with 4 others and we had pushed a small buck into a neighboring field... Watched a fellow dogger take a brace on a fencepost and fire a 100 plus yard shot at it and the deer ran off... He then exclaimes "this buckshot is ####"... I never hunted with that gang again for this and several other reasons...

Ahhhh so thats the story of why you hate buckshot and some of the users. Can't blame ya, thats pretty stupid.

I just dob't see a real world application for it... If you feel you can hit the 8 inch sweet spot take the shot... If you don't then let it pass... This can be done with a slug... Too many people think a shotgun creates a 2 foot pathof super destruction...

A fella from work came out to the farm one time for rabbits... While he was there he asked if he could show me some of his "super" reloads of "OO" Buck... I put out a 30" X30" piece of plywood at 30 yards and he let one rip, when we checked the board we couldn't find a single hole, "dud" says he... So, he fired two more rounds... One hole in the bottom left corner and one hole in the top right corner... "That's better" he says... I made a mental note to never hunt big game with him and suggested that he keep working on the recipe...

I just don't see a place for bucksot... If you are sure of putting a shot in the golden 8 inches you shouldn't need it...

I have been lucky enough to not see anything stupid like that in the field, but good job on identifying your target. Look at the number of threads started recently about guys getting shot in the field for one reason or another. There's obviously some guys out there who would have just put the black fur between the front and rear sight and blasted away.
 
Was hunting near Coderre, SE of Moose Jaw Sk.

Watched an idiot standing on the drivers side running board of a full size dodge camper or boogie type van holding on with one hand, holding his rifle in the other, while the van went ripping across the field after a doe that had buggered off from the patch of bush on the one side of the field to another. Figure they topped out around 45 or 5o miles per hour.

The guys pushed the bush in their trucks so much that the deer wouldn't get up and run from a vehicle any more. Lots of deer there, but you had to walk into the bush where they hung out.

But the guy on he running boards was the stupidest thing I have seen when hunting.

If the shooter had an ar-15, the trajectory is alot flatter and he wouldnt have missed low. this is another case of if only the shooter had a black rifle, a life would have been saved!!!! well i mean a human life, the squirrel and hat would be airborne!!

I know a fellow who shot his truck from the inside - accidentally. He had a Rem 788 (I think), and as he cycled the safety, it fired a round through the bell housing, into the back of the block, which deflected through the distributor and out the rad. The other guys in the hunting party thought he'd shot himself, but no it was only the truck. We found a way to get someone back to the farmhouse where the other vehicle was parked. Arranged for a tow to get out of the field, and then got a better tow vehicle to get everyone back home. We made the unlucky one put on a snowmobile suit and steer himself. It cost more than $600.

The place for buckshot is when you see a big buck 200m from someone's house, as opposed to 400m from someone's house ... at least here in NB. I agree a slug does more damage, but I can't legally use them where I hunt.
 
Personally buckshot works to my advantage when I'm gun hunting, in the unique situations I'm hunting in. I have a good killing pattern to 40 yards, great pattern to 35 yards, excellent pattern at 30, and devastating pattern below that. The max shot I can take on my stand is 40 yards which happens to be the rounds and my personal limit. I've patterned many brands of slugs at the exact same ranges and beyond out of my gun, and they shot no more accurately at 40 yards, and at that range they were no more consistent than buckshot. This is because of the shotgun I have (SX3) has a large front bead that makes an accurate shot with a single projectile difficult at any range over 30-35 yards. If I have a deer that comes in at a slow trot at 40 yards, I would never feel comfortable with this setup shooting slugs at that range, its just too high a risk for bad shot placement. Surprisingly I had that EXACT situation happen last year on the stand opening morning when I had my first buck and also buck of a lifetime come within 40 yards at a steady slow trot. ONE shot with buckshot and he hit the dirt and stayed there at 40 yards. If I were using slugs I would have let him walk as I wouldn't be comfortable with the shot and it would have been the greatest hunting regret of my life.

Thats just me personally though. I've done my due diligence and try to do my hunting as humane as I can. I've patterned many brands of loads with many chokes and have done the same with slugs. I would not take any shot no matter what I was using if I knew it wasn't going to end well. I'm only using it ethically, I can promise anyone that. In the right hands its a great load with great potential, in the wrong its a disaster and absolute embarrassment to ethical hunting.

I do understand both sides fully, and completely understand its terrible joke of a reputation. It does not belong in the hands of irresponsible hunters who can't judge distances correctly or cannot control their nerves when they see a deer. If you have the ability to take a breath and line up a shot at a known distance at a range thats acceptable with its pattern, its good. Otherwise slugs are the way to go, hands down.
 
Some kind of semi auto shotgun being fired out of a truck window on accident. They jumped out in disbelief and another round went off in to the dirt.
