durability of the Desert Eagle

I gotta side with Slavex, 757 and Coyote on this. I have 2 DE s both 44 mag 1 is first production other is 4 th gen. Both get shot LOTS and I have had no problems. They do like to be clean , shoot good ammo and NO lead.
When shot limp wristed they will stovepipe, but my 1911s will as well.
Are they a practical pistol,? probably not, but very pleasant to shoot, take up lots of room in the safe and I would not want to be without at least 1.
No collection is complete without 1 in it

Rick, Any wild guess on how many LOTS is? More then Slavex?

jstreet I would think my older DE has in excess of 25000 rnds through it, my newer 1 only in the 7 to 8000 rnd area.
I reload all my own ammo , in the DE 44s I have found that the Hornady 265 ger bullet that is really designed for 444 Marlin not only feed very well due to the shape, but also soots well. I use a stout load of blue dot from the TC part of the loading manuals, as the max loads for revolvers are much lighter.
Slavex is shooting a 50 I believe, I have stuck with the 44s as I have several other 44 cal handguns and buy bullets enmasse. 1 day I will find a 50 with my name on it though.

Yep - Lead is forbidden in a DE. It clogs the gas ports in front and will destroy the gun.

Not only are these things expensive, you've got to feed 'em the good stuff. You can protect your investment by being meticulous about keeping the ports clean - carbon can build up and clog them too, just not as fast.

Just re-read my post - someone might get the impression I don't like them.

I do.

I will get one myself someday. They're worth the extra (well, my opinion) care and good bullets.

NONE of the Desert Eagles have ever had a "pinned" gas piston. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to strip and assemble this gun. It's not a Glock by any means, however the cartridges it fires are a lot more powerful.

Then I must have been handling an imaginary pistol :) Pictures to follow.

As promised, pictures...

Ok, as promised, here are a few pictures comparing a Mk XIX with a "pinned" gas piston to one with an "unpinned" gas piston; you can see the differences yourself.

hmmm OK SDC I've never seen that before either and my DE is one of the first in Canada. What is the history of those two guns?

I was seriously considering the .50ae. my buddy has two of them. What turned me off was the the empties almost always hit me square smack between the eyes. Not limpwristing, I own a freedom arms 454 casul so I'm not recoil sensitive. I found that I began to flinch in anticipating the hot empties . I did get the HK mark 23 but not instead of the DE. Two different animals. I found that after a few mags through the DE, the old cliche, been there done that really applies to that pistol, thus saving 2 g's in the process to get a more practical pistol IMHO.

Have someone video you shooting it. You'll almost certainly find that it's twisting and lifting more than you think - that's the only reason to get brassed with a DE.

yeah I thought of that. I googled some talk sites on getting brassed, seem more common than not. But like I said earlier, got it out of my blood. time to move on to other pistolees.

I wish I knew the complete stories on both of them; the top one is marked as being made in the US, while the bottom one is marked as being made in Israel.

Screw it, be a man and eat the brass! I'm up there with Slavex. I do the 50 and the 44 thing. To think I almost sold it, dear god forgive me. I can group really well or totally sucky. I can hit myself in the middle of the fore head or have nice clean ejections. This gun is for the BLING BLING factor! Which is exactly why I have it.

when shooting the .50 you have to take it in the elbows and not let the wrists break.

Well, I just got a Mark VII .44 amgnum... since, I am STILL waiting for my ATT, and I haven't been able to shoot it yet, I can't really comment on it other than to say it's a MASSIVE gun, points very naturally, and mine is a two-tone model (grey frame, black slide/barrel).

Man, I can't WAIT to go to the range and put some rounds through it!!! :D :D :D

Cheers!

New pics tomorrow after the range.

Well I took my gun to the range and I think leaving with my friend for 3 years was a mistake. The gun had recoil problems, we thought it was just dirty, but it failed to return to battery. So I guess I need new recoil springs. Also as I've said before my gun seems to work flawlessly with CCI Blazer ammo. I ordered some CCI ammo but the store I ordered it from didn't order it, not really surprised there. So I tired all kinds, factory and reloaded stuff. Problems presisted. So Im going to order new springs and CCI ammo from another store. To add to all that, some how my side lock got rounded so now it wont lock back unless the mag is in. YAY! Now I understand needing to buy new springs, but the mysterious slide lock thing bugs me. I dont know how it got rounded out over night but my friend thinks its an easy fix but I hate fixing ####.

I still stand by and say the DE is a reliable gun and its fun as hell to shoot. But mine is like a supermodel girlfriend. She attracts alot of attention, is high maintenance, costs alot, and can be a real ##### when shes not in a good mood. HAHAHAHA. Hopefully this weekend I can get all the issues ironed out. But Im fairly confident that even without new springs, the ammo will work. Dont ask me why but when I first got it I had the same problems until I got CCI Blazers. They are some kinda magical ammo for my DE. If I can find the ammo tomorrow, I may try and go back tomorrow if I got time.

I haven't shot mine enough to be able to comment on the reliability. But it doesn't really matter to me. I love when the range officer comes out of the office to see if I'm shooting a rifle on the pistol range because it's so goddam loud. The fireball makes me happy too. I like putting the .50 ae cartridges beside the ones for my 9mm and I like knocking craters in the silhouettes. That's my DE experience. If I was going to spend $2000 in a practical way, I would have bought an RRSP.
