My buddy was at his cabin north of Kamloops and had a deer come pretty close while he was around the camp fire last night. He mentioned it had a tag on the ear. Is anyone able to shed some light on this? I know they used to use ear tags for studies, but I figured they have moved to using radio collars for that sort of thing.

So, any ideas? Might this deer have been tagged by biologists for some sort of study? Escaped livestock maybe? I don't know what kind of deer it was, but it was only a 2 point buck so it likely wasn't all that old.

there was a Fallow deer farm in Pritchard BC , not sure if it still exists
There was also one out of meritt on the road in to glimpse lake.

again not sure if these exist but all game farmed deer/elk whatever... must be ear tagged.
If I saw that while out on a hunt, I would contact the area CO.
We don't need escaped farm deer breeding or passing disease to the wild stock.

Part of the interior mule deer study
usually ear tags are on deer with collars, which may have been present also or lost.

I was aware of that study but that first link is the first time I've seen them mention tags, everything else I've read only mentioned collars. Seems like a possible answer, I sent my buddy the pic of the tag and collar in that article, we'll see if that's what he saw (he said it was white but it was night so...)

Unless I misread the article, aren’t all the study animals does? And the animal in question in the op is a buck.

Does and fawns. I haven't seen anything that specifies if the fawns are all female or not.

But you're right, if it was a 2 point Buck there it would be too old for that study, even if they were tagging male fawns.

possiblylikely tagged as a fawn, male or female, to watch for survival rates

how old are two point bucks?

but what do I know, best to ask the project lead or the regional bio

Two point bucks would have to be at least 1.5 years old and the study only started this past winter I do believe?
