early season yote tactics

Coyotes catch me with my pants down at the sheep farm all the time.

HAHAHAHAHA!

I hope to coyote hunt in southern Ontario this year for the first time.

I just finished the El-cheapo home made caller with MP3 calling sequence from this site.

Also on this site are instructions for a decoy.
I just ordered a weasel ball from E-bay to make the decoy

I have a gentleman dropping a deer carcass off in the coming weeks, make sure it's out near the ditch that leads into a heavily wooded area.
At night, there's a big pack of them coming around, and they're very well fed, I live in a 'OK to fire' area, just outside of Windsor, so I can't wait to get out there!

I just just started last year, got one in the first 10 min of calling, so I am hooked now. I was thinking about one of those shaking decoy things also so I do not have the dam dog run straight at me like last time. How big are these decoy's, will they fit in a small backpack??

The moving critters are usually fairly small (12 to 14 inches) with s stake. When apart I can carry both parts in my coat. Fits good in a bag.

Does anyone hunt with one of the mini phantoms?? Just got one with the predator stick. I've tried a couple of ocassions but only in the p.m. No luck so far.

Is it good to call from a treestand on the edge of a field??

They work ok... bu tyou have to upgrade the speaker so it gets louder.... I bought a used foxpro for 80 bucks off the EE and it is VERY loud and clear.... don't buy their brand name external speaker, go to radio shack or walmart and get one twice as good at half the price....

Where did you find the mini amp? Only place I can find them is Radioshack in US and on Fleabay, since I don't have a PP account, ebay is out of the question as most US people don't want to deal with Canadians in a money order situation.

Would also like to find an MP3 player with an IR remote rather than possibly having to buy yards of stereo wire.

Mini phantom uses standard size external speaker jack... Get a setike you would use for a laptop... Much more sound out of something the same price...

Now.. If you use an mp3 then you just have to put a minute of blank air into your recording to allow yourself time to get back to your stand....

My setup is a modified mini megaphone I purchased on Ebay because it's small, loud and has a built-in battery pack.

I also have 2 x 50' of stereo extension cables

I used an old 512MB MP3 player for the sound source. Sometime I will put the MP3 player with the megaphone and sometime I add 100' of cable in order to raise and lower the volume.

The megaphone didn't have an audio IN so I modified the circuitry with a 3.5mm connector, a capacitor used converted the siren switch to switch between audio IN and the microphone.

It's a very clean and compact setup.

I got it at Radio Shack in the US. I could not find anything similar here locally.

That Varmint Al's sight has a 16 and a 20 minute MP# sequence that starts with 2 min silence, then a call (eg. rabbit distress) for a mintue, then silence, then another call etc.
They also have individual calls that you can create your own sequence.

I did one a few years ago along the same line.

these are things i've learned.

Special thanks to bigbush! This is precisely the information I was looking for as I prowled GunNutz tonight.:D

I decided to take a whack at coyotes because there is only about a million of them around here this year and I am convinced that they have really hurt the deer population. I have had a Manitoba trappers license for many years so I am allowed all I can get. (We have had some timber wolves around too the past few years. A local guy got a big black 130 pounder about 5 miles from here the other day and I saw a big grey one myself while hunting deer in November.)

Bought a Foxpro Spitfire today at Cabelas and my Jack-in -the Box is on order from Jo Brooks.

I knew there must be a few techniques that I should brush up on before I hit the trail and bigbush has summerized them nicely. I also heard that one should set up the call/decoy ACROSS the wind from the stand so I'm gonna try that.

I'd like to whack enough of them to pay for my Foxpro but who really cares. I have a Hutterite on tap to buy the yotes from me "in the round" while they are prime.Gonna use the .243 with 80gr Soft Point Federals.
If anybody has any further advice to add I'd be glad to hear it.

I've been after them for 3-4 years actively now and it is hard! By active I mean I was out 3-4 times last week, Friday afternoon, Sat morning and going out tomorrow too!

Deer are a snap compared to yotes, I can't seem to get a break. The mistakes you make with deer don't fly with dogs.

I always try calling but where densities are low, it is really hard to be where they are as they have a large range here. A favorite tactic is to go out ater a light dusting of snow and cruise logging roads until I find fresh tracks and go from there. Baiting gets me a few chances but tie your bait to a tree. I had a deer carcass tied through the hamstrings with steel tying wire and they broke it and drug the deer off!

Now I use the bottom wire off chainlink fence, lets see them break that!:D

I just ordered a Foxpro Spitfire tonight as I need to get the calling sound away from me. I use a quiver critter but IMO, they navigate with their ears and they do not come out of the woods and look around wondering where the noise is. They know EXACTLY where it is and will often come out right on top of you.

I have the mini phantom and external speaker as the base unit is a joke. Haven't had much luck with it though. Sounds are kinda cheesy to my ears so the dogs probably don't buy it.
