Eating Crow

Hi,

I don't actually intend to eat crow, or any unusual forest bird unless I happen to be starving to death. But I'm curious to know what the dangers might be in eating crows, robins, blackbirds, and other small birds that one may find to be a food source in a survival situation. What diseases do they carry and what precautions must be taken to avoid contracting some heinous parasite or virus? Aside from hygiene and cooking the birds thoroughly?
Are they anymore "dirty" that game birds like pheasant or geese?
 
Search the internet for 'crow recipes' - apparently you can slice off the breast and cook it up. Other than the bird flu, I haven't heard of any problems (assuming it's properly cooked)
 
Honestly, in a survival situation, there are WAY better things to eat that are a helluva lot easier to get your hands on. Squirrels, for example. Or Wabbits. Yum! :D Earthworms and crickets are also easy to find, and are extremely high in protien and nutrients, with no risk of disease or sickness. Same with most kinds of insects, really. If I were stuck in the woods with nothing but a .22, I sure as hell wouldn't be shooting at crows, no matter how hungry I was :p
 
A couple of buddies of mine ran away from home when they were young and lived of gulls for a couple of days.

None the worse for wear, but none too proud of it either.
 
Pest carcasses are usually pesticides-ridden.
Junk food contains sugar substitutes and free processed gluten.
Fish and shellfish do not directly receive high concentrations of those.

Yeah, that was on the "crowhunters" website.

Like I said, I would only try eating them if I had no choice. I'd sooner eat crow than seagull though.

Why are they protected? There should be a bounty on the filthy things
 
they taste great if you cook the breast properly;) been 3-4 years since i cooked some but it tasted great and was tender. seared each side of each breast and then cooked on lowest heat for a couple hours with chicken stock...very good:)

pigeon, grackle, starling, sparrow and red winged blackbirds taste great too;)

:eek: How much meat is there on a sparrow? Can you just eat the whole thing in one bite, bones and all? Starlings are even worse than crows IMHO, you'd have to pay me mucho $$$ to eat a starling :rolleyes: Filthy little birds.

Seagulls are pretty big, so they'd probably be good eatin', but I dunno man. I bet the meat tastes a bit fishy :redface: I'm the exact opposite of tapedeck74 though, I'd rather eat a big fat juicy gull than a crow :cool:

I think this is the most interesting thread I've seen in a long time :D
