My wife's Grandmother recently passed away and in the basement we found a .22 Long Rifle Eatonia Rifle. If given to me (I'm the only one with a Pal) I plan to register it before the amnesty is over in May. But I have a few questions about the rifle if anyone can help.

1. I own all new pistols and rifles. Once cleaned is this thing safe to shoot? I've taken it apart and everything is in working order. The bore looks good, the bolt fits tight, and rust is very minimal on the outside of the barrel, nothing some CLP wouldn't cure. I ask because I would make it the wife's gun because it's small, and iiI would not want to see it come apart on her.

2. I understand they were made by Cooey. How old is it? I don't think it's worth much so I thought I would refinish it.

3. Lastly it appears to have no serial number on it anywhere, just the stamp Eatonia 22 Long Rifle. Will this make it difficult to register?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like a Cooey built Model 60 made to order and imprinted for eatons in the late 50s early 60s before serial numbers were required. Worth about $75-$100 depending on condition. . If it cleaned up ok...bore is not corroded...there is so little that can go wrong with the gun mechanically and the low pressures of the .22 ammo is unlikely to harm anything. If unsure have a gunsmith check it out. I tied mine to a tree and rigged a trigger line to fire mine. It has been happily firing for the last 40 years.

Registration will be easy as they really only want the barrel length measurement. I did a few of mine without serial numbers no problem.

I have the same eatonia. You're right they are made by Cooey and had no serial numbers. You will get a sticker when you register it. They tend to break the extractor so if the shell doesn't eject just pull it out by hand. They are a great little gun and mine has been in the family from new and handed down, although i don't know exactly how old it is or what it was worth new.

As stated made by Cooey for Eatons in several different models from single shot(yours?) to the Eatonia repeater which was a model 60.Eatons contracted Cooey as early as 1924. if yours is stamped Eatonia 22 Long Rifle it will be the same as the Canuck which means its an early model. If its stamped Eatonia 22 cal its from the Ace era which is much later in the 30s.

If you hold it well away from your body when you fire it s/b ok. Check the first case for any abnormal spots. I would leave it alone unless you really have to go at it with sand paper. Your grand kids will thank you some day-----Cowboy

Thanks for the help. It is stamped exactly " Eatonia 22 Long Rifle". The bore and rifling looks to be in good shape with no rust or pitting just a little dirt. I don't have pictures of this rifle but I did find one online that looks almost exactly the same except it appears to have a serial number.

This is a link to pics on the web site http://www.joesalter.com/detail.php?f_qryitem=2912
