What is the effectiveness of .308 on Deer, moose, black bear and caribou. And what would be the max range a 165-168 gr bullet will remain effective for each animal?

nothing to be sorry about
as soon as i receive my pal, im buying a 700p in .308, so i was just wondering whats the max distance i should consider on big game

What about coyotes?

Dude, I believe the 308 is the best chambering for everything relatively big in Canada, although a few choices are better, if you got 'em. Also a 308 blows away a 30-30 at 300 yards. Not that you should be shooting each at that distance unless you're in wheat field in Sask! Lol!

I agree, about 300 yards.
I have seen a deer shot farther than that , however, the man behind the rifle was a very good shot and knew his rifle inside and out.
He also knew how far the deer was , as we were in a mowed field....

The Canuck, if you would have seen the damage a 168 sierra matchking does in a coyote at 600 yards you would not worry about a deer! but remember at that distance you need to be a pretty good shooter with a pretty good rifle with a pretty good laser rangefinder

It comes down to how well you can shoot. At over 300 yards the 308 wil still kill...
The reason I said 300 GH, is becuase the .308 is getting a little tired at 450, so I added a little safety net and said "300"
It'll do the job at 500 I guess, but I have better fierpower if I'm planning on
shooting the long stuff....

Does your jusridiction allow use of HPBTs on game? Even coyote?

I saw the 168 mentioned in TheCanuck's first post and kinda ignored it but hey, curious minds....... do plan to use HPBTs on game?
For the bigger critters, the 180s are the way to go mind you.

Dosing, there isnt any law against match bullet for hunting (in Quebec)but be careful, not all match bullet have enough expention, for example, sierra matchking 168g in .30 works great but the 135g matchking in .270 really does'nt expand much. The best thing is always to try your bullets on varmints first, you dont want to injured a deer for nothing :(

Match grade bullets are not suitable for deer. They're not made to expand. Not all HPBT's are match grade bullets though.

it's not ''CAN'' a 308 kill a deer ,bear or moose at 250 years-it's can you SHOOT a 308 accurately at 250 yards under field conditions. The 308 will do it's job if ypou do yours

My brother shot a yearling buck with his .308 using 180gr Nosler Partitions. The shot was from about 15 yards. The deer died.

308 is very effective out to 300 yards or a bit more

I'd try to limit shots to 250 yards and closer on elk and moose

165-168 gr. is ideal in the 308, I load the 165 gr. Hornady Interbond in a friends Model Seven, but he has yet to take any game with it.
