Effectiveness of .308

we dont have elk in Québec, and the chances i go hunting out west is pretty slim right now.

250yrds on mooose, note taken

What if i was to use a 30inch barrel to up velocity? With the right twist rate i could stabilize a 180grainer pill just fine and be lethal further, no?

why not just buy a 30-06 or 300 WSM then?

30" barrel would be the most awkward hunting rifle EVER

ah nevermind, ill just get a long range hunting rifle built by a smith in the .270Allen magnum wildcat(.270 pill on a 7mmRUM casing)

Looking back over the years, I can think of only two shots taken on big game over 300yds. Only four over 200 yds. And maybe a dozen over one hundred. Now, this may be because I simply didn't look for shots at long range but I do know that every head of big game I have shot could have easily been taken with a 308. In fact, since a goodly number were taken with either the 303 British or the 30-40 Krag, the performance was essentially just the same as with the 308.
I have honestly seen very little noticable difference between the performance on game of the 308, 30/06, or 300 Win Mag. You can throw the 270, 280, 7mm-08 and the 7mm Mag in there as well. Similar shots on similar animals had similar results.
I think some of the larger calibers(338 and up) do start to shine a bit when a poor shot is made (it happens). Regards, Bill.

I have shot some groups with my 700 Classic chambered in 300 Savage that were pretty impressive at 300 meters, so I don't see any reason why a good marksman with a 308 should have any trouble out past 300 a bit. Eagleye.

I recently bought a new deer gun (Rem 7600) in 308 and I'm taking out for it's first hunt this season...I can't waite to see how it performs. :)

I am a 270 fan and have been for 40 years. Have more than one plus a 270 Wby, but I just think this is either a joke or a waste of time and money.

Now that I have that off my chest  , let me say that my lovely wife of 38 years has killed literally tons of moose and caribou with her "little" Ruger RSI inn 308, and has done it with a very few shots.

180 gr partitons at 2600 fps using IMR4320 are plenty out to 300 yds.

The catridge or bullet size is not the limiting factor. Your ability to place the bullet where it needs to go IS.

I killed a deer at just shy of 600yds with a .30-06 using a 168gr bullet. The ballistics of this round are close enough to identical to a .308 round to not bother arguing about it.

.308 will be a bit much for coyotes. Those big bullets will just zip through a 25 lb coyote without doing much damage. If you insist on using a .30 cal on yotes, at least handload up some 125gr Ballistic Tips or 110gr VMax's so it'll have a chance of expanding.

The 110 VMax's do a number on yotes.

thx for the reply, it was actually worth reading, compared to some i wont name

This is dumb. Marine snipers use .308 to kill insurgents in Iraq out to 1000 yards on a regular basis. I see no reason why shots must be made at 300 yards or less with the .308 if the shooter is capable of hitting accurately out past that.

A .308 with the right bullet and load hits harder at 450 yards than a .30-30 does at 100 yards

Most of you guys should spend more time honing your skills as marksmen rather than squabbling over which round will do a better job of compensating for poor shot placement

I am a huge fan of the 308 Winchester, I would pick it before any other caliber for a big game cartridge. However, Marine snipers have a lot of training and fancy equipment to help them with their shots. Most hunters don't have that training or the equipment to help them estimate yardage and hold the rifle steady, or have the time to watch their intended target and wait for the perfect shot. Most shots at game are taken in a short period of time with a lot of adrenilin pumping through the veins. So for this reason, I think most ethical hunters realize their limitations and keep their shots within this range.

I am not making any comments what so ever about anyone's ethics, I am just pointing some of the reasons you hear the 300 yard limit quite often when talking about shooting at big game.
